Getting paint off valve cover??? SEARCHED...
Hey guys, was wondering if someone can help me out. Ive been trying to prep my valve cover for paint and I cant get the old paint off. It appears the owner before me did not use regular valve cover paint, it may even be regular spray paint. Ive laid down two thick, thich coats of aircraft stripper and let it sit for almost an hour and only took off a little bit. I then tried lacquer thinner, which didnt do a whole lot either. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do, or what is a good way to take it off? I wish i knew what kind of paint it is, all I know is the stripper and lacquer thinner just made it kind of slimy, anyways, any help would be appreciated, TIA!!!
Maybe your not using the correct aircraft stripper? Mine came off in about 15 seconds when i applied it.
heres a pic of what I used.

heres the outcome.

Yeah I see what youre saying but Ive stripped 3 valve covers with aircraft remover and it worked awesome...the problem with this valve cover is its not regular paint I think he used regular spray paint or somethin...the aircraft stripper barely does anything to it...thanks for the input guys but it still doesnt help out yknow
Yeah use aircraft stripper. That is exactly what i used to get mine off. I didn't paint my valve cover though i just used some mothers aluminum polish and it looked pretty trick.

I like the look of the stripped valve cover. Is it alright to strip the paint and run it that way or do you need to repaint it before using?

I have used the gel paint remover stripper to strip off even POWDERCOAT off a valve-cover--that stuff is like 1/8" thick. Try using medium steel wool after you have left the stripper on for a little while--and rub hard. Lacquer thinner probably will not do anything. You can definately leave your valve cover unpainted--just steel wool it or scothbrite it every couple of months as the aluminum will pit slightly (the white flakes you see)
