Im wondering if anyone here has had the chance to drive the japanese spec dc5r and what they thought about it compared to the DC2R.
Overall is it better or worse.....

I have driven 2 of them, the first was a 2001 car, was completely stock and had only something like 10k miles on the clock. Personally i preferred my DC2 ITR, teh DC5 felt too refined and quiet. I wasnt able to push it that hard as the salesman was sitting beside me. I also wasnt too keen on the steering, it just felt a bit vague (it may have been the tyres, dunno what they were), I did however like the gearbox, very slick and smooth. The other car i drove was a 2002 car and had been lowered on tein coilovers and a fujitsubo power getter (i think) exhaust, it felt like a much better car than the other one and i was able to push it to the redline in every gear, power delivery is very smooth and the was much more torque/power available lower down in the rev range. They have a much more refined note when the vtec cuts in compared to the DC2 ITR which is more raw and noisy. I liked it but it was way out of my price league, and i was glad to be back in my DC2 afterwards, however i can see myself buying one in a few years time. Theyre becoming quite common here now and the price of them is dropping a steady rate so maybe in a year or two i'll think about upgrading to one of them. This is a picture of the second one i drove...it was priced at $37000!!!!!!!! >>>

Bear in mind "worse" means quieter, better speakers, leather seats, etc lol
I love the DC2's rawness. Most people buying cars want transportation...if an R sticker makes them feel special then so be it...

no leather in DC5R...
I'll kindly tolerate paper cone speakers and more noise for the DC2R's rawness.
People looking for just transportation rarely seek out an R in any flavor.

Geez, that video again. From what many have said about the video, the DC2's had more modifications done to them so I wouldn't take that as gospel.
What I would say is that a lot of race teams have moved away racing the DC5 and EP3 because of the suspension. This leads me to believe in race trim that they are not the most ideal platform (see: Realtime TSX, and Spoon & JAS Accords). But stock for stock the DC5R is faster from the accounts I've seen and the engine has much more potential.
I'd like to hear from more people who have actually driven the car to get a better idea. Gansan said something to the effect that the DC5R feels more refined at first but its limits actually turn out to be quite high, higher than the DC2.
Take what you will from it. I'd buy the DC5R if we had ever gotten it. If I were building a HC H1 car I might select the DC2R over the DC5R tho, depending on what some of the people who race Hondas professionally said.

Mine is not refined really and feels quite raw to me. Driving my friends DC2R with an aftermarket suspension, mine was/is now kinda still stock, his did feel better at initial turn-in, but overall I prefered my ride. Power delivery is just so much better from the K20 over the B18. I took him out on the gymkana course and he was very impressed with the 5s handling.
Yes Honda did in a way take a step backwards with the front sus setup, it does have it's limits to some extent, but if it is tuned properly, one would not really tell the difference. And if you look at BTCC this year, Honda pulled out, but the first race was won by a privateer team (Halfords) and they are using a DC5R.
And yes that video was to show how a basically stock DC5R would do up against a heavily modified DC2R. That video was made just a month after the DC5Rs release. All that was done, was S tires, early suspension(no time for development) and an exhaust. The DC2s were pretty much gutted, prepped engines, completely tuned suspensions, S tires, pretty much the works. If you look at it from that perspective, the 5 actually did quite well against the 2.

Well we'll just chalk it up to driver, but I haven't lost to any of my friends DC2Rs when doing gymkana against them. And they are more experienced at it then I am.

Hi,
I have never drove a DC5R....
But i had a JDM 98 Spec R for 2 years and now i drive a JDM Civic EP3-R.
In my opinion, engine is more powerful and gearbox is a delight.....it is more comfortable and better for everyday driving.......it handles tidily as well......
But for all out fun, still the DC2 gets my vote !

The DC5 stock for stock is a faster car around the track but from my reading the DC2R stands more true to the orginal Type-R concept and always seems to be voted the more fun car by professional testers.
I had a 2000 dc2r (AUST/NZ Spec) and now have a JDM DC5R so feel quite well placed to comment.. this is a modified version of a post I made last year on the subject.
DC2R was tweaked with Bilstein suspension, JDM 4-1/Trust PE II, Mugen Intake and JDM 16" and my JDM DC5R has KG/MM springs, Hondata Airbox mod and an unnamed Alxeback.
Handling/Chassis wise DC5R feels more solid and stable and the DC2R feels more lively but wayward. Overall some would like one and some would like like the other. DC5R feels like the front end will never let go but DC2R felt more adjustable. I find my self able to drive faster without needing the same concentration levels. FYI steering on JDM DC5R feels much nicer that export DC5R.
Motorwise the DC5R feels fairly torquey but still has a nice top end. I always thought my DC2R was pretty flexible but the DC5R has a lot more zing out of corners. DC5R feels pretty restricted by intake and exhaust compared to my DC2R. I've now done the Hondata airbox mod and and added an axleback and things are more open feeling.
Gearbox on the DC2R had nicer feel but the DC5R isn't too bad. 6 Speed and nicely spaced ratios definately help. Factory lightweight flywheel is nice too. The engine start button (option) comes in handy as it's easy to stall.
Comfort and feature wise it's DC5R hands down. It's easier to live with on a day to day basis but I never really found my DC2R a problem.
In the end some people will prefer one and some the other. I prefer the DC5R overall but still like some aspects of DC2R better.

Having driven both a JDM DC2R and JDM DC5R, I still prefer the DC2R.
The DC5R is in a different category really. It's more of a fast cruiser rather than a fast track car for the street. (In street form anyways)

What people prefer and what is actually better/worse are two different things. The JDM gods dont lie, the DC5R WILL lap Tsukuba one second faster than the DC2R, in stock trim of course. Does anything else need to be said?

I agree--what "better" means is all subjective.
DC5R's are faster. But faster doesn't necessarily mean more fun

I've driven US Type Rs quite a few times and an RSX type S a couple of times. I have no idea what a DC5R drives like, but I prefer the DC2 tegs a lot better and I doubt the DC5R would change my mind....
