Default Timing Belt

Question here - I got my 98 GSR @ 116,000 KM (~72,000 Miles) - Im now @ 137,000 KM (~85,000 Miles).

However when I bought it the guy *told me* he had changed the timing belt but I dont want to rely on his honesty. Also, I know for a fact he didn't change the water pump... so it'd be 2 things to do at once.

So the question being: What are the symptoms of a worning-out timing belt? Anyway I can check myself? Any pointer for me to find out if the timing belt is the original one or only 30,000 KM (~18,500 Miles) old.

No need to tell me that if it's still the stock one, I should change that puppy ASAP.

Thanks for your time!

Default Re: Timing Belt (fukushuu)

i changed mine at 115k miles. got the car at 98k miles and i don't think previous owners changed it (there were 5 of them according to car-fax). there are no symptoms in car functioning that you can judge by. however, if u get the valve cover off (with car shut off) and then rotate the crank pulley using a 19mm socket through a hole in the fender liner (can be done if u turn the driver side front wheel out). first rotate the pulley counter clockwise then a lil bit clockwise, then again CCW (be careful so the belt doesn't skip cam teeth). if the belt is old and stretched, u'll see half inch of slack coming up between cam gears. at this point u can get the slack out with tensioner pulley, but usually that means the belt has had enough. also if it's very old, it'll have shiny spots and hard on it's flat side. that's how mine looked. it was also very dirty. sometimes u can see tiny cracks in it if u push the slack up and down.

viva Canada, eh?

i bought a 92 4 door civic about a year and a half ago and it had 117k miles on the clock so i assumed the timing belt had already been changed... boy was i wrong

a month after i bought it, it broke, more or less destroying the motor.
sold the car on ebay for $800... a month after i had spent $3000 on it

change the timing belt asap... don't risk it
