98 Honda Accord V6 Gas Fumes
Hi All,
My girlfriend has a 98 Honda Accord V6 that is giving off some noticeable gas fumes. It occurs at all fuel levels (not just when full or after adding gas) and is most noticeable when turning the engine off and getting out. There are no visible leaks that I've found yet, nor are there any drops of fuel on the pavement. Just the fumes.
I'm a member of a similar forum for my own vehicle and am hoping that someone can give me some good tips on where to start looking to trace the leak. I don't have much experience working on this car, but have found my way around most of the fuel system on my Tahoe. I'd appreciate any pointers that you could give me for diagnosing and correcting this.
Thanks!
-Chad

Do you smell it inside the cabin, under the hood, from the exhaust? The 98 & 99 V6 Accords are known to have a lot of pre-cat O2 sensor failures. Has the MIL light ever come on? If so, you may want to pull the code.

The smell can be noticed, at times, in the cabin. It does not seem to be coming from the hood. The smell is more towards the rear from the outside. I'll have to try sniffing more closely around the exhaust.
The Check Engine light has come on before but it went away on its own and has not come on again for at least a month or two. I did take it one time to Autozone when the light had come on about 4 or 5 months back. They reset it but said it didn't trip any codes, which seemed odd to me. The smell is definitely like unburnt gas... Does that seem in line with a potentially bad pre-cat O2 sensor?

If you saw the check engine light come on, then you should have someone pull the code and find out what it was. Most likely it is the pre-cat o2 sensor. If you take it to a shop for a diagnostic be careful, some places misdiagnose this problem and sell the customer a new cat instead of the sensor. The reason why is pretty complicated to explain however.
If you have the code pulled, post it in this thread and I'll tell you what it means. Sorry about the late response but as a trial user I can only post 5 helpful hints in a 24 hour period (teh suck

check those fuel injectors.. you could have one that is leaking... if not corrected a vehicle fire could be a result...
