Tore CV boot and worn bearings- What axles to replace; 4th gen or 5th gen??
Basically, I have very worn out and tore up axles for a 92 SI. I am planning to do a 5lug conversion later down the line but I need to replace the axles now.
I want to buy the 5th gen axles for the conversion later (people claimed the 4th gen axles were too long, not allowing the axles nut to be torque properly), but I do not know if the 5th gen axles may be too short for the 4th gen knuckle/hub assembly? I don't think it can be short enough to cause problems, but I would like to get answers from someone who knows, rather then plain assumption.

I did the swap and used 5th gen CV axles. I still had to use a thick washer on both ends to make sure everything torqued down okay. You should be okay with 4th or 5th gen axles. Driveshaft Shop, where I got my stage 3 axles said the difference between 4th and 5th gen axles is miniscule (something like a millimeter, or less).
If you decide to use 4th gen axles, I still have my OEM axles, both in great shape.

Thanks, I have someone that can get me new 4th/5th gen axles for a price I can't pass up. Thanks for your input and offer tho

i just change my driverside axle. and it was kinda of a bitch. just check you half-shaft if you are change your driver side because depending if your car is lowered or how many miles you have you might have a bad bearing. i just did mine and it is eaier if you just do them both because you will probly have to order it and also they half shaft is just as much as your axle, it might have a core but you will get that money back.
Yea, I'm going to replace both just to be sure, these cv joint shafts have seen A LOT of miles. I have everything completely removed (knuckles, tranny, motor
) so it's not so difficult.

if you need to replace the axles get your 4th gen axles. And if you are going to do a 5 lug conversion, all you need is to get the 5th gen knuckles. And also if you do the conversion you need to get the rear ABS sensors from the 5th gen cause your 4th gen sensors won't work, and if you want but its not needed you can get the front ones too. My 4th gen front ABS sensors fit fine but where they bolt up to the knuckle you can only get one bolt in, that goes also for the brake lines. But its nothing to really worry about. But the rear sensors you need to get.
I've read many people having issues with getting the proper toque for the axle nuts because the 4th gen axles were too long? I don't like the idea of using washers to secure something like that down. Even 2lude4u said when using 5th gen axles he still had to use a washer. What's your take on this?
