1992 accord ex problem.....any advice?
Hi all,
I've had this problem with my 92 ex manual coupe for almost 6 months now. Just to make a long story short, it started with...after driving for a few minutes, when stepping on the gas, the rpm wouldn't rev up and the car would shake and no matter how I step on the gas, it'll just shake and won't accelerate. The funny thing is it goes away after a minute or so and then the rest of the trip is fine. It was like that in the winter and now it would do it anytime it feels like it. Does anyone know what can be causing it? I've had my mechanics looked at and they only did a tune up for me and the problem still exist. The car has 120k miles and still runs fine except that at certain times, the car just won't go when I shift into gear to accelerate. I've tried fuel injector cleaners, no luck. What can be causing the problem?

I had a problem with my 92 that sounds very similar. My problem was solved after replacing the ignition module in the distributor, but it was a recurring problem and I've replaced it several times. My final solution was going to the dealership and getting a 2000 2.3.

Hmm...I am no mechanic but seems like you guys are leaning towards the distributor. I had the distributor replaced about 5 1/2 years ago on the car. I'll try to bring it to my mechanic next time hopefully when I get a chance in a few weeks and bring up the distributor issue. The car is really not worth much but it's still in very good condition and it's also my 1st car so I want to save it if possible. I rarely drive it anymore because of the problem. I've replaced it with another car that I bought recently, which is a G35.
By the way, how much does the ignition module cost? Is that a separate add-on piece to the distributor?

It's a piece inside the distributor, I can't remember how much it costed. The cause of my problem was oil leaking into the distributor and shorting the module, meaning that the distributor was fine, only the module needed replacing.
So when you had the problem they had to take out the distributor and JUST replaced the module inside right? I mean...how long does the process take?
How often was the car not accelerating when you had that problem? Everytime you drive? I find out if I DON'T warm up the car and once I start the engine and rev it when I start driving to like 4,000rpm, etc...sometimes I don't get this problem. It's just so weird. But lately, it's been happening everytime though. It's kinda dangerous too...if you want to change lane and all of a sudden the car wouldn't accelerate.

Right, only the module is replaced. It's a 20-30 minute job. My car did it every time I got in it and would only stop doing it after about 15-20 minutes of driving. When in neutral the car would rev fine but when on the road it wouldn't go over 3000 rpm's without shaking like crazy until it had warmed up for a while. As the car warmed up you could gradually increase your rpm's before the car would start to shake again.
Thanks for your info Jake. The sympton you describe pretty much sum up how my 92 accord is. I gotta talk to my mechanic about the ignition module when I get a chance...hopefully after my mini vacation that is coming up...
Sorry to be stupid but like what I was saying I ain't no mechanic. I know what a distributor does...but what does that ignition module do? Is the module visible when I look at the distributor? Or it's hidden inside?

The signal from the magnetic sensor in the distributor is sent to the ignition module and the ignition module takes this signal and opens and closes the ground circuit to fire the spark plugs. It is inside the distributor so you can't see it.
