Default Would a test pipe result in a loss of low end power?

I managed to get in an arguement w/ a friend if a test pipe (straight pipe, resonator, downpipe, whatever you want to call it) would result in a loss of low-end power. He seemed to be quite stubborn in his opinion, but could not cough up any proof. So this got me wondering, would a test pipe actually result in a loss of low-end power (esp. torque)? I think this would only be true if it lead to a drop in exhaust velocity, but i need someone else's opinion on this..

going with the theory that an over sized exsaust on a na motor would cause a loss of low end torque...i guess maybe he's right..well he is if u added headers/1/2" larger exsaust and free flow muffler. this setup would have low backpressure and would yield more high end power at a loss of some low end torque.

imo imo imo

also, i would think that the cat is actually quite restrictive...removing them has to make substantial changes (perhaps more than changing muffler) in exsaust flow
