URGENT :How to LOWER boost with Tial style wastegate
A friend is getting his car tunned tomo morning at 9 so we need to lower the boost with another alternative then getting a new spring...
He has a imitation Tial 38MM wastegate (he has the SS autochrome one)
that came with a blue spring,, which is like 20PSI...
I need to know if we can cut the spring... to lower the boost..
He has a manual boost controler so if he sets it too lowe he can put it back up!
thanks
Tyler

There's nothing you can do other than swapping out the spring. Cutting the spring should never be attempted.

you cant cut the spring..... if the spring were shorter then the vavle would stay open because the spring wouldnt be long enough to keep the valve seated..
dont half-*** it... buy a new spring, you might have to postpone the tuning date.... but waiting is better than building a new motor

dont really wanna cancel on the tunner the same say since I think he will be reallllly pissed,,, since he has a big waiting list
so as long as I dont cut the spring like crazy I should be ok right???
To make it clear, the spring will still need to be long enough to have pressure against the cap of the wastegate..basically I will need tp push it down when I am putting the screws back in!
that make any sense?

no, dont cut the spring at all..
if the valve is open by the tiniest bit... exhaust gases will bypass the turbo, slowing response and really throwing the tune off once you get the proper spring... plus you cant cut a 20psi pring enough to get it down to 8 psi or so
if the spring is cut by even 1mm, thats 1mm that the valve is open.
DO NOT CUT THE SPRING WHAT SO EVER

i dont think its open at all.. literally i needed 2 people to push down on the cap of the wastegate to close the top and put the screws in,,, the spring is big and hard...
so i think i can cut off like 3 rings before there would be no pressure gainst the top of the wastegate!

i would try buy a spring or borrow a spring from someone around you or buy one from that tuner, most likely he will have one laying around or so that you can buy or use

Absolultely you can cut the spring. You'll love the results - waaaAAAAHH-BANG!
I'm no pychic, but I'm pretty sure that the tunner would rather have you cancel rather then blow your motor on his dyno. Not just because of the rep it gives him, but 3.5 quarts of oil isn't fun to clean up, esspecially when it gets in the rollers.
**** happens to cause delays, the tuner should know that. Maybe you should CALL him and see if they have any springs they can tune with? If the car is worth it to dyno tune it, you won't take shortcuts.

Should have been more prepared. If you were on a waiting list, plenty of time to prepare for this. Better buy some race gas and do your race gas tune tomorrow.

We cut the spring on a friends kit, because of incredible boost creep. It has been like that for about a year. Come kick me in the *****... when I tune your car... haha

If your friend has the big blue spring thats 14.5 psi. If its the smaller blue spring then its the 8.7. Yes you can cut the spring, but you dont know what youll be boosting , until you try it.

But if you cut the spring drastically, I am with everyone else on this one. Just wait it out man.

no one in your area has a spring you can buy seperate or borrow to use... what a bummer... too bad your not closer... I would definately take mine out for a boosted friend to use, in a heart beat.
good luck... hope you find a spring or something works out!
