timing belt broke.....
I was sitting at traffic lights last saturday on Oxford St (Sydney) at 11:30pm (so for thoes who dont know, it is one of the busyest streets at its most busiest time) and my car appeared to have stalled while at idle and wouldnt start up again... i called out the NRMA and they said it is the timing belt...
i havnt taken it to the mechanic yet and im just wondering on peoples opninion on wat kinda of damage has been done....
thing is, some ppl hvae said that i can fix the timeing belt and it will work again,,, but others say that i have prob bent some valves which could cost me a few grand to fix!
if anyone has and experience or ideas, please feel free to send them my way.

Hopefully its just the timing belt that needs fixin'. But if your valves are bent then it could be costly if you are paying someone else to fix it. However, a couple grand is ridiculous. I hope you dont pay that amount.
You can fix the timing belt problem yourself and while you are at it, you can see if your valves are bent. Go from there.

well, you can do what I did after I broke my timing belt. Check the valve clearnace, remove the valve cover, instert feeler gauge. Specs are between .03 and .05 or somewhere like that. If you get anything that like .10, then thats a bad valve.
my timing belt snapped while my car was idling also. No valves were hit or bent because the only way that can happen with a v-tec engine is if it snaps while v-tec is engaged. So the mechanic told me anyway.
Fit a new belt and if there's nothing hitting when you turn it over by hand, its a good sign. Start here up if all is good. If you hear any banging...well you know the story, if not, happy days!
If you are unlucky, it shouldn't cost mad money to repair. Pull the head yourself and send it to an auto engineer and get it checked and repaired. You might as well have the valve stem oil seals replaced while it's there and they have the cams out.
