Default Knocking noise from engine.... Trannyt Problem?

Hey hows it going guys. A few days ago I was just cruising and decided to get on it for a second cause this guy was like my s2000 will rape your car ***. I was like alright whatever bro and he tried to speed off but i owned him. Anyways i noticed a knocking noise from my engine later that day. I was like **** I broke a bearing or something. So I go down to my machanic and I take him for a drive and he couldnt hear it I could he couldnt so he said down shift I did and the noise was horrible. He said My tranny bearings were going damn that sucks.. How much you think its ganna cost me and what do you guys think I should do? Sell my car or what. By the way its a turbo GSR.

if it's a transmission bearing, it will have a symptom more than just noises most likely. usually it will have trouble going into gear or popping out or something. if you find it's your gearbox, bring it to me .

well it only really makes noise when you down shift its a grubling knocking noise and isnt that loud when im in high rpms just cruising. I can barely hear it at high rpms.

Uh... transmission bearing?

Do you notice any kind of power loss? If not, you can probably rule out most valve troubles. If you still have power, a main/rod bearing could be on its way out. Is this sound only at high RPM or low RPM? What year is your GSR?

Then again, since you have a turbo and it sounds like you beat the crap out of it every time someone looks at you to keep your ego in check, a "knocking" noise in your engine is just the start of your problems

Yea a tranny bearing. it only makes loud noise when i downshift when im going slow you can hear it the best when i put it into first from second going slow. at high rpms it just goes away kinda. I have a 1999 GSR. Sound is through all the rpm range just can hear it crazy well when i downshift to 1st.

Well here's the thing - you can determine if it's drivetrain or engine related. Does the knocking sound speed up when RPM's increase at low speed, or does it speed up at high speed?

It's probably drivetrain if the noise is speed dependant and engine if it is RPM dependant. Know what I mean? For example, if the noise is occurring when you throw it into neutral at 50 mph, then you just narrowed down the problem.

Post more info.

or, if it's neither solely rev-based nor solely vehicle speed based, it may be clutch related.

it is rpm dependent u just cant hear it at higher rpms it goes away and at 50 throw into nutrual I cannot hear it.

then it's engine related. now you just need to locate it (ears and reciprocating or rotating sound)

Then here's a for your mechanic.. well it could be a pilot bearing, but those don't knock or make noise.

You may be looking at a spun main or rod bearing (possible causes being oil starvation and detonation, two things that a turbo can encourage). I don't think anything in the head could cause a noise like that and still run, but who knows...

We need a second opinion.

what we/you really need is somebody with some experience to take a look (or a hear) at it and tell you.

Ok I went to my autoshop tonight and we were tring to figure it out so here is what i found if this helps you.

We put the car on the lift and put it in gear and got it up to 4k rpms with the wheels moving.. no noise engine is good. the noise is deffinatly coming from the tranny. damn this is a bust what can it be.. my teacher said he doesnt think its the clutch cause it doesnt do it when its idling and the clutch is always moving.. what do you think i should do?

thanx for the help so far.

you sure its the tranny, ive never herd of knocking noises from a transmission, i had a similar problem with a 93 altima, knocking noise at low rpms and then it knida goes away the higher i rev. I would get your internals looked at, cause it turned out to be my pistons, and if your driving around with your pistons knocking you can blow your motor any second, that **** would just bust out. then again i could be wrong

I would get it checked just in case...

its tranny there is no noise from rpms cause i put it on a lift and put it in gear and started driving on the lift 1st gear and second no noise. and you can kinda hear stuff in the tranny if your right under it.
