GM 3.4L DOHC V6...anyone saw one w/ major power?
I figure since there are so many nhra and nopi drag racers in here, asking here would be the best idea for me. My friend is looking at building one of these to put into his car to compete in the local sport compact drag racing events. He doesnt want a 4 cylinder in the car though, and it also must be a GM engine since thats the make of the car he has to put it in. Rules are the motor must be OHC, and thats about the only 6 I can think of that GM makes...
Anyone saw a race car at an event with this motor built/turboed? I know they *should* be able to make lots of power, however we are more worried about if the cast crank, and block would hold high amounts of power. (thinking around 500-600whp)
Thanks guys

I don't know what class he is expecting to compete in with only 5-600hp. You need to check out Matt Hartford's ride. Mega power out of a stock crank V-6 GM motor, out of the Caddy CTS. He's probably making around 18-2000hp. Cranks are not living forever in this application, but at 600 it would never break.
not sure about the 3.4 a friend of mine has a 3.4 in his fiero he is working on turboing but i know he was having problems finding a lot of aftermarket parts for it and an EMS.
I am running a 3.8l supercharged motor in my fiero and have yet to have any issues but I am not putting down much power just some minor mods to the motor.

He actually wants to put it into a fiero. He already has a pretty built up 3.8L fiero that does 350whp and 400w torque. Since its a pushrod setup though, its not class legal...
Parts for it...no problem. Import parts are nearly the same price as one off's when it comes to pistons and rods anyway. Same for head and main bolts. The other stuff such as turbo manifolds and pipeing and ICs and the like can be made in house.
This car would compete just fine in the local sport compact races we have
It doesnt have to get 1st place, he just wants to be able to compete...
Before we go to the trouble though, I want to make sure the motor wont crack a block, or the crank. Both of those happening are nearly certain death for the project considering a custom block would be $$$$$ and the crank crapping would kill the rest of the engine which woudl also be $$$$.
Whats this about a 3.4L caddy engine? Is that the V6 northstar setup?
Also underpressure02 - Any EMS should be able to control that motor. Its mostly just a matter of figuring out how to get the ecu to recognize the crank angle. Haltech E6x comes to mind as one of the cheapest. I believe the haltech E6xGM (or e6GMX whatever its called) will plug right into the factory harness of the fiero (assuming he used it/spliced into it when he originally installed the motor) and its even cheaper than the e6x

ah, googled matt and found out he is using the 3.6L DOHC caddy V6. Also looked for used engine prices and of course since its a BRAND NEW engine, the cheapest I could find was $2400. Thats a negative considering that price is for a block and heads alone. Be a cool motor for the relatively poor to build in about 10 years when the price is reasonable
(IE: below $1k for a high mileage engine)
The 3.4L's on the other hand are findable at like $300 all day long, SUPER CHEAP.
Anyone else with 3.4L info?
