Hey i just bought this type of hoodpin:

I like it cause it locks and is less-invasive looking than other pins ive seen.

Anyway so i am installing this on my carbon-fiber hood and was wondering the best way to drill and measure the holes in the hood so it doesnt crack and is symmetrical?

I figure i got the drilling part:

1. Mask squre off using tape with hole location in the center (lay fown a few layers, on both sides of hood)
2. Start holes with super small drill bit
3. Slowly widen hole using larger and larger bits until it is the correct size

is this right? How do you mesaure to get the pins in the same place on either side of the hood tho?

this is how i did mine... with the hood on the car

-installed the screws/nuts/bolts on the radiator support first.
-get paint, white out, rice, tape, glue i don't know. paint/place the top of the part where the lock is supposed to latch onto the bolt so when you close the hood... the paint/tape/glue/rice should show up underneath the hood. this is exactly where you need to drill.
-make sure you don't drill a hole bigger than the washer.

 

Just as some additional information, those aren't hood pins, but rather hood locks. They're a decent additional anti-theft measure to prevent access to the engine bay, but I wouldn't rely upon them to actually hold the hood closed with the level of security that traditional hood pins are meant to provide. I would personally suggest picking up a set of hood pins instead. As for your original question though, deLasoL7 described a good method for installing them. Just be careful, take your time, and you should be fine.

 

yeah im not getting the pins to hold the hood, just the left side rises and i need something to hold it down that will hold it yet wont be big and ugly like regular hoodpins...

I found that it is easier to use a dremel to sand the hole open more then a bigger drill bit, it is more smooth and acurate and you dont run the risk of the drill tearing the fiber

 

i used a file after using small dril bit to get it as small as possible

i dont have a dremel, i was jus tthinkin of gettin a set of drill bits that are progressively larger and running them through...

Ill see if i can score a dremel from a buddy

 

if anything get a nail file from your mom or sis or gf or any chick. arent the hood pins kinda sqaured off at the top?? if so, drill bits are round so you will have major excess that you drill out that is not needed

not a good choice

the curve of the hood doesnt match up with the flattness of the rad support

with those you have to remove the OEM bump stops and place them there because they match with the flow of the hood.

i ultimately locked one side, while the other side sat loosly, it ******* sucked

i orderd the sparco ones, i couldnt be more happier

YOU CAN ADJUST THE PINS 10X EASIER THAN THE LOCKING ****.

i had that same problem the right side of the hood sat up a little more so i bought those mr. gasket ones but to say the least, it was a mistake and didnt work out at all.

argh i already paid but i dont see why they wouldnt work.... if the dont follow the hood i can ebnd.heat warp them to...

Well i guess well see how it goes, i DO NOT want big hoodbins on my car... I woudl rather have the locks and paint them black...

sorry for hi-jacking the thread, but i couldnt resist to ask, is there any more pix of your AE86 look F-ing SWEET!

 

i installed the hoodpins first i put them in the same hole of the outter headlight bolt , i had to drill that hole a tad bigger.Then once the pins where in i took nail polish thanks to my sister put a dab on the top of each pin let the hood come down and lightyl touch it, finally took a small bit drilled through then worked the hole bigger with a bigger bit, i choose the outter headlight bolt because i hate when hood pins are to close.

 

are U sure the nail polish was from your sis? JK sorry I couldn't resist
