Default Which impact to get to kill the crank pulley?

Hey everyone... I've decided to upgrade since my pathetic impact guns sucks. Its a craftsman, which cost me about 80 bucks so I didnt expect much but it wont even budge a crank pulley in my friend integra. My question is that how many ft/lb is enough to take out my prelude h23a1 crank pulley nut since I need to change my timing belt. I was looking at the IR2130 or the craftsman professional 19905. Do you think 500lb is enough to take off my crank? Thanks for the help.

Try some WD40! I opened mine using electric impact. I hold the pulley by left hand with glove, and opened it with electric impact.

Hey I told you to use some WD40 see if it will help. I did not tell you to use electric impact. I told you I used it in my case.

Save your money. Get the best breaker bar you can find, maybe one with a 3/4" drive, and a heavy/long extension. With the crank holding tool, this is the most reliable way of getting that bolt loose.

Please do not use a impact gun to take off the crankshaft pulley.

If my word isn't enough, look in your friendly helms manual where there are big, bold, instructions specifically telling you to use a breaker bar. Your engine bearings will thank you.

Like the guys above me said already, use a breaker bar with an extension. Use a pulley holder tool to lock the pulley in place and step on the breaker bar. Works everytime.

WD40 sucks...Use Open/Shut, it works much much better. Secondly for a good Impact Gun buy an Ingersol Rand 2135Ti it is the best gun out there as far as I am concerned 1000ft/lbs of reverse torque. It takes anything apart. If you must, get out a torch and heat the head of the bolt up until its cherry red, then let it cool down for a few minutes, this lets the heat soak into the threads of the bolt and you will bee less liely to snap the head off the bolt once its cool.

The answer is NO... more than likely you will not be able to use a 500lb impact gun to get the nut off.

There is a specfici tool for holding the crank, and you should get that... Then get the car on a lift, have one guy hold the crank holder with a long extention on it, and the other guy torque the nut off with a breaker bar attached to a LONG pipe.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an impact gun to take off the crank pulley nut. I've done it COUNTLESS times, and most of the time on my motors which I am tearing down. When I check the bearings, there is no abnormal wear, NOTHING from the impact wrench. On many motors, a very strong impact gun is the ONLY way you're getting a pulley/gland nut off.

FWIW, I have an IR231 (IIRC); I know it doesn't have 500 ft'lb s and it works fine for everything I've done.

your engine bearings couldnt give two ***** if u used a 10000ft-lb impact wrench or a sumo wrestler hangin off the end of a break bar to break the nut open, as long as u loosen it w/o stripping the head ur fine

I personally use the breaker bar, crank pulley tool method, and it has never failed me. I have never had a problem with ANY crank pulley bolts when using this tool. Best investment as far as I was concerned.

Helm's manual is just like the media . Don't believe everything the manual says. I had an original Helm's manual from the mid 90's for an Accord. It said to use 3 quarts of motor oil when you do an oil change.

you think that craftsman professional will do the job with 600lb. of torque? I was thinking I might just go with the IR 2135ti... I know its overkill but I just want to buy one impact and not have to worry about it anymore. Do you think the craftsman is enough?

Enough? sure. What kind of work do you think you will do in the future?

Honestly, it should do anything you need to do; the titanium IR is a blangin gun, but I would only buy it if I were running a shop and/or did tons of work constantly.

just use the breaker bar/ screwdriver method. takes all of 5 mins to do and saves you some cash.

Sorry for the off topic question. Where did you guys buy your crank pulley holders at and how much are they? I dont want to use a screw driver to hold the flywheel becuase i like my flywheel having all of its teeth on the ring gear.

trust me, doing this will put your fly wheel in no danger. i've done this a few times and it doesnt even leave a mark on the flywheel.

Hammer away at it with the impact wrench / torque away with the breaker bar.

As stupid as it sounds, the best way I've found to get the bolts off if they are stubborn (sometimes they are a REAL *****) is to torque them -clockwise- (ie, tightening) with the impact wrench for a few seconds, then switch it back to reverse and it'll usually break free within a few seconds.

how many lbs is the crank supposed to be anyways? And why does a 400-500lb impact wrench can't even bust it loose?

ok------here's what you've all been asking for

This is from the Helms on the 4th gen. Id imagine 5th gen would be approximately the same.

220 N-m or 159 lb-ft

----
I used my friend Mike (225 lbs) standing on a 6ft breaker bar. It was REALLY on there.
To chime in with my 2 cents....I really would not see the harm of using a impact gun to get it OFF, however, reinstalling it I would only use a torque wrench.
