Default Help. Rod knock?

My 97 base has a knocking/ticking sound. It sounds like a rod knock, but cannot tell if it is coming from the block. I took it to a local performance shop and the owner was taking a look and doing a couple things and couldnt tell if it was coming from the head or block. He pulled each plug wire and blah still couldnt really tell. He grabbed a tool(dont know the name) put it on his ears and touched the motor with the tool, he said he could hear it more in the head than in the block.

You hear it at idle the loudest, when i give gas up to about 3000 rpm at a stop you can hear it, but not as loud as at idle, and when you are driving you do not really hear it after you get up past 2k rpm. Does this sound like a rod knock? I have been searching posts, but most of them are talking about the noise getting louder when you get higher in rpm's, but mine is opposite. I have had an integra with a rod knock before and knew the sound and after 2 days it gave out, but my lude has been doing it for a while and dosent seem to be getting any worse.

Any help would be great!

It doesn't sound like a rod knock, but that doesn't rule it out completely.

Sounds like it may be a valve tick, but that is very different-sounding compared to the rod knock. Is it a loud kinda high ticking/pinging, like something small and long tapping metal on metal? A valve tick should also be fairly easy to pinpoint to the head.....

First thing I'd do is pull the valve cover, get some feeler gauges and check the valve clearances to see if any are really outta whack.

If the valves are fine, drop the header and the oil pan and check the bottom for small metal shavings. If you see some, you've found your problem. If not, drop the oil pickup tube, windage tray, and main girdle and check the main and rod bearings. If one is spinning/knocking, you will be able to see it from a worn area on the bearings. Only do this last step, though, if you have a torque wrench handy.

Good luck to ya!
