Sounds like a distributor problem

That was happening to mine, changed the distributor and that fixed it.

Well, with mine, it would get to about maybe 4000 RPM and then the needle would just jump around. Nothing wrong with the engine or trans or anything. (Happened with my old CRX also, Its a common thing on old cars). Unless your engine starts to rev erratically or your gears shift weird/hard when the tach needle jumps around then its not the transmission. See if you can borrow someones distributor and just bolt it on to see, im 99.9% sure its your distributor. The shaking sounds like a distributor problem also, I believe its the ignitor thats going out (thats exactly what happened the first time to my CRX, the car would kind of stutter). That shop is bullshitting you because theres no way the tranny would make the needle jump around, its in no way connected to the tach, but the distributor, however, is

Nope, I'm with the shop on this one. You're having problems on your upshift engagements. When the tranny is supposed to go to the next gear, it isn't engaging right away, kinda leaving the tranny in 'neutral' for a brief instant, sending your RPMs up. Then, when the gear finally engages, it pulls the RPMS back down and results in the vibrations you were referring to. Best bet is to swap it out with a remanufactured unit. Sorry for the bad news. Definitely get a second (hands on) opinion on it, though.

Does the tach jump around, or just jump up when it shifts? If it jumps around then its the distributor, if it just jumps up when the transmission shifts then its the tranny like the guy above said

Good point. I forgot to add that part. You can just change the ignitor if the rest of the distributor is still usable

like for example .. if the car was on park or neutral .. and the car is not moving .. if i stepped on the gas hard .. like a quick rev .. it would way pass red line ... maybe where 10 woulda been if 10 k was available for the ls but obviously .. what i m trying to say is it goes way above 8 as if it was going to go around .. and when it revs that high .. i kno its jus the tacho because the engine doesnt sound like its going that high up .. it was prolly only at 5 or 6 k .. and yea the engine does start shaking if i was trying to rev high to accelerate faster .. i remember one time .. the light was turning yellow .. and i stepped on the gas a little harder .. usually for automatics .. it would jus downshift and accelerate out .. but since something was wrong with my car, it downshifted to around 4.5 k ( pass 4k) and the rpm jumped and the car just died out .. i hope that was enough details and thanks for the inputs

Oh... well then it's probably going to be the bee guy's suggestion. Sounds like the ignitor (aka ignition control module... inside the dist) is going bad. What the hell, the car's probably old enough that it can use a whole new dist. Once again, 2nd hands on opinion!!!

Yea that definately sounds like a distributor problem Well at least thats good news though, if it were the tranny that would have been a bitch and a half!

It can get pricey. Especially if you pay them for the parts. Try going to distributor king (I think its http://www.distributorking.com) to pick up an aftermarket dist for your application. I have not personally used one of their distributors, but it comes highly recommended as a low cost alternative to an OEM dist. A Shop shouldn't charge more than 1.5-2.0 hours to install, but they prolly won't warranty it since they didn't get to rape you for it.

i also notice that when the car idles .. like at a complete stop .. if ur standing on the passenger side .. near the fender u can hear something rattling .. can that be the transmission rattling because i kno for sure it is not the engine and it is not any exhaust pipes .. if it is the tranny rattling .. what can that mean .. maybe its back to a tranny problem huh ? ...
