I'm running a Ys-1....and Yes it happens, that tranny just runs through the gears like no one's business. On my bad new set of tires, i can get a good strip of rubber going, but you gotta rev pretty hard to get it to just spin. that tranny just gets up and puts the power to the wheels man.
I too had the Hf tranny and yeah i miss the th gear top end.....just chugs along up to liek 120 and ****...hahaha....But dude....Honestly in the HF with the B16a and the Ys-1 gsr.....I feel like i get to 60 quicker then anyone on the road....I feel like No one can keep up. But that's just me....
On the boost note.....You might have to just....Punch the first gear and launch in 2nd.....Just pop off in 2nd....If your vtec crossover is stock...and the tranny is in good condition.....1st gear=punch it shift immediately and launch off in 2nd....and just watch the needle climb into the red.

It is geared like the 90-91 XS-i (S1/J1)

Am I alone or does anyone else think these transmissions are geared too low?
Maybe I'm used to my old HF trans.

I imagine guys with GSR transmissions (92-93 XS-i) must really peal out since they are geared even lower in first.

I'm wondering if a 92+LS transmission's final drive with the Y21's close gears might be nicer while pulling out.

Haha ANY transmission you drive after driving a HF tranny will feel short...

I used to run a US YS1 B17 tranny when my CRX had the B17 in there. Yes, that was a very short geared tranny. Too bad no factory LSD.

I then became one of the first to run a complete Type R engine with its own HYDRO Type R tranny in my EF. ( I have one of the 1st HaSport Cable to Hydro conversions )

My Type R tranny feels really short, especially in a light CRX HF. Its also a JDM 98+ spec so I have the 4.7 Final Drive and factory LSD.

A buddy of mine years ago swapped out a LS 5th into his JDM S1 tranny and he regrets it. His tranny now grinds in the 4th to 5th gear upshift.

I think my 4.7 Final Drive is OVERKILL in a car as light as my CRX, but until I run across another Type R hydro 4.4 FD tranny that has not been **** pounded, I'll stick with this gem .

I had been running a LS transmission when the choice between a j1 and y1 presented itself. They were both available at exactly the same price. After careful consideration. I went with the y1. I even went a step further and used a LS 5th gear. So 1-4 are reasonably tight but 5th is a great highway cruiser. 80mph floats right at 3700rpms.

Thats resulted in 40-43mpg on the freeway. Witihin a couple mpg of the LS trannys best, but much better acceleration.

The drawback is the space between 4-5 is noticeable. You have to ride 4th pretty high in the rpm band before switching to 5th.

In your case I would pick the Y1 over the J1 also with your LS. Just like what you opted for. The Y1 is a bit taller than the S1/J1. Coupling your LS to a S1/J1 would make it accelerate quicker, but it would make your LS run out of breath sooner.

The LS has the torque to pull your EF through longer gears than a torqueless B16.
