Car needs me to pump gas for it to start
Hey guys, i guess i'm not getting enough fuel when i start the car.
I changed the fuel filter because I thought maybe it was clogged but i was getting the same result.
Well I was just wondering if there are any you know more about this problem and what causes it. I understand that the fuel pump could be going bad, but j/w if this is a difficult process to overcome and if it does end up being replaced, is there a specific kind i should buy(and why?)?
I was also told that the way that the distrubutor is tilted can cause the car to not get enough fuel to start. Or rather, be running to rich or lean.. J/W if this could also be the cause if needing to pump gas before i start?
BTW, is there a way i can test the fuel pump?

do you have any codes?
does the car run good once started?
did it just start doing this?
have you changed anything on the car around the time it started doing this?
you can test the pump by connecting 12v straight to it at the connector found under the cover panel, which is beneath the rear seat.
what you're talking about the distributor is the ignition timing, and has nothing to do with the air/fuel ratio.the timing being off will certainly affect the car's performance though.

-It's not throwing any codes
-the car seems to run fine once started, but I wouldn't exactly know because I bought this as a non running car and put the z6 in it and i had a bunch of other problems before but all of them have been fixed cept for this..
-No, it's been doing this since i put the motor in.
-Didn't change anything b4 it started doing this.
The weird thing I JUST noticed was, sometimes i can give it pump the gas pedal a whole lot and it doesn't even start up still..... does this help narrow the problem down any?
Oh yeah, if this helps at all, i can hear the fuel priming in the beginning stages, but i guess the real question is am i getting enough pressure.
Is there a way i can check the pressure?

pumping the gas pedal in our cars doesnt do ****.....it just opens the throttle body... its not carburated (i think) so why do you think your adding fuel when you pump the pedal?
Opening the throttle with the key turned on will have the pump, pump more fuel to the injectors. Run some injector cleaner (these may be clogged and not spraying well), also test fuel pressue because you may have bad pressure and you're not getting enough fuel at start-up.
If I opted for the injector cleaner would make dramatic improvements in terms of flow?
My other question is, After checking the fuel pressure, If the pressure isn't up to spec then how am i to know whether or not the problem is the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump?

here do this.... pump up the system and clamp the return line from the fuel pressure regulator... if the leak stops than you know the pressure regulator is bad and the diaphragm is probably worn... and you could take off the vaccum line to the pressure regulator to see if there is any fuel leaking into the vaccum line bc of the diaphragm being broken.....
thats one of the problems that is pretty common

If you disconnect the vacumm line on the regulator while you are testing pressure and the pressure doesn't jump up then the regulator is bad. If the pressure below spec with the vacumm line attached and below spec when you disconnect the vacumm line then the pump is probably bad or there is a clog in your fuel.
If pressure is low, then try running something called BG-44K in your gas tank next time you fill it up. That will help remove any gunk in the lines. Also help the injectors get cleaned.

Try the greased lightning fuel additive. This will really clean out your injectors and fuel system very well. I used it in my car and have seen an increase in gas mileage. Hope this helps.
EDIT: If it is really clogged you may have to do this on more than one tank of gas.

Hey, I can't really drive this car to the gas station. Well I can, but I dont know if its legal. First it's not registered yet lol, and the second i dont have any of the front body panels on it.
The car has about 1/3rd of a tank left, can I just use 1/3rd of the fuel additive into the tank?

Hold on a sec.
>The car was non-running and had to have an engine put in.
>You have not driven it because it's not registered yet.
Is it possible that you are trying to run old gas left over from the time the car has been non-running?
If so you probably pumped a butt load of water or crude out of the tank into your filter, it most likely needs replaced.

Even though he did replace the filter the crap can still be in the lines. When my car sat for couple of months, I went through 3 filters before everything was out of the lines and tank. Still a good idea. Try draining the tank and putting fresh gas in it even if it takes a few trips to and from the gas station. It could help alot.
Would it be a good idea to siphon out all the old gas? And is there any way to tell if there is water in the gas just by looking at it? LOL dumb *** question I know....
How many gallons do you guys suppose a quarter tank is on a 92si?
thanks for the ideas guys i appreciate all the help!

arite guys i did a little searching for people that were having trouble cold starting. Anyway one guy said that if the thermostat sensor is messed up then the ecu will think the car is hot and then not give the extra juice that's needed to start cold.
Does this sound like it could be something that could be causing my problems?
I have a multimeter at home, I dont know how to use it but Is there some way to test the thermostat with the multimeter? I think I read on the same thread some guy saying to test with a multimeter
