Default So I blew my head gasket...now what...

Yeah, This car seems to pack a powerful punch for a lil 1.6 motor.... The only thing is my 91 ef si has blown it's head gasket. I could tell because white smoke started to pour out the exhaust. Now...I guess I have to resurface the head? and replace the gasket. Does anyone know of some high performance gaskets that would be good with a high compression all motor? OR anything other things you can do to a car....peace honda homies

z6 and y8 are the same construction, which is all metal instead of the composite that the a6 uses, so they are stronger. the only problem with them is they cost more and you have to get the seating surfaces PERFECT for them to seal.

they are both thinner than the a6 headgasket, and some say the y8 is thinner than the z6, and some say they're the same size. i believe the y8 is the cheapest from honda, however.

about your head, check it with a precision flat edge, to see if its warped. don't machine it unless it's warped.

also, if you're gonna pay to machine it, you should probably check out the clearances on the camshaft journals and stuff, i paid to resurface the head one time for a headgasket and then realized they were worn beyond specs. 40 bucks down the hole...

Get the head checked for squareness. hell why not go get it machinedm maybe shave it down a little to get some compression. hell if you got the head apart, port it polish it. upgrade the valve shizle, maybe an aftermarket cam.

When I see things break its time for an upgrade.

thats all been done. port polished ctr style crower cams and internals you know, plus the head has been cut for higher compression like 12 to 1. maybe I need to get it machined..Im a fakin newb to all motor work. I noticed slight cuts in the head walls by the cam lobes...theyre going horizontal in wavey lines...looks like aknife cutting butter...it looks like damage.

i'm betting it blew frim detionation... why? because it dosen't sound like you tuned it at all (no VAFCs dont count becasue they can advance your timing thus adding to the possibility of detionation). Any good all motor build requires good tuning to push the most power safly out of the motor

Now that thats taken care of... use a OEM B16 head gasket. A "Spoon Sports" headgasket is just a OEM one with the cent layer removed thus making it a 2-layer. Goto the dealer and ask for part# 12251-P30-014 this is the head gasket from a 99-00 Si (B16A2) and is a 3-Layer metal gasket.

edit: oem spark plug gap is .044" if i remember correctally, with higher compression you can close it up a bit but it's not nessary

Thanks for clearly answering my questions ???? I went and bought that exact part. Also, your right tuning has not been doen correctly. The car was sitting around for a bout 3 years before I bought it. I just got it restored and as soon as I get it running with the new headgasket and maybe a resurface if it looks needed im taking it to a dyno shop. Thanks!
