Default Best way of painting rims, non ready in a pepboy can style.

The wheel section is probably the place for this, but it gets about as much traffic as north dakoda.

any way i want to paint my rims a bronze color, i'm no paint expert, but i know how to airplane strip. I was just wondering is the wheel paint anything specail? or do i have to pick up a special kind of paint? I will probably do a clear coat and follow the means that i've already researched, but I just can't find bronze in a "Wheel paint can".

cliffnote:
special paint for rims? or just get one and pray for the best out come
color of coice..bronze

I think that dupli-color makes a bronze wheel paint. they sell that brand at schucks/kragen/checker auto parts stores....I have used their gunmetal wheel paint before and it is the second best spray paint I have ever used. Pep Boys has a plasticoat wheel paint....not a big fan goes on real thin but is decent.

this what I have done for painting wheels take it or leave it
-do on a warm day with low humidity...THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT TRUST ME!
-clean clean clean clean
-lightly sand...something medium grit...just enought to to rough up the clear or whatever is already on the rim
-throw all you paint in tub of real warm water...shake them and keep shaking them....when you inbetween coats throm them back in the water
-if you dont want paint on the tires you can stick some playing card or something between the rim and tire...if they dont stick up try deflating the tire...and trow some thick tire glaze on the tires too...you will get some ove spray it gets in the air and this way you can just wipe it off
-if its a light colored rim and you are going to go dark...i usually use a few real light coats of some dark high quality primer...it seams to help the the wheel paint stick...of course if you are going for a lighter color IE white dont do this...plus you it helps you save $ on that expensive wheel paint
-light coats of the wheel paint...and just build it up...get the cracks and crevices first
-just keep building it up
-clear if you want to....decide on what looke you want...when I have cleared it has changed the look to the point where I wasnt happy...too shiny or whatever

then when you are done...realize that for $175 you could have just got the whole set powder coated...well thats what I paid for a set of 17x9 cobra R's

2.5 Cans of Bronze Wheel paint.

-Washed VERY throughly. I washed by hand... no water. Just Goo Gone. The stuff that removes stickers. The rims were REALLY clean.

-Then I sanded w/ 3M green scotch bright pads.

-Sanded sanded sanded.

-Then taped off.

-Then sprayed with "paint-prep" Its in the automotive paint section. Wiped it all down really nice. Made sure not to get any dust/oils on the surface.

-Sprayed a whole **** load of light coats. You get greedy and spray a heavy one and it drips.

Fortunately the Duplicolor stuff is REALLY forgiving. Its like... you can wait for a drip to dry a bit and then spray more . Then the drip flattens out. I had to do it once. Worked out great. Almost made me think you could paint a car with this stuff.
