i unhooked the proportioning valve, gently moved it out of the way (careful not to pinch the lines)
then unhook the bolts and the alternator comes right out.
i found not enough room to go out the passenger side, under the intake manifold, and no way it would clear the rear crossmember.
so i went straight up with it, around the master cylinder.
this was in a 1990 crx dx, it took me about 10 minutes once i found the correct info here on honda tech.
