Default Research for my Senior Project (TURRBO GSR)....

Hello everyone, im working on my mech engr senior project (which is building a turbo system for my gsr). A lot of you have done that (turboed your gsr) so you can help me with some feedback. I'm working on a section where I will do some stress calculations on certain components to try to find the range where failure occurs in our stock engines (a reasonable estimation). This info would help me pinpoint what areas i need to analyze instead of analyzing every component. From this, i can justify my power goals and sizing for turbo and all that other good stuff.

So this question goes out to people that have actually turboed your gsr and have had components break. I would like to know what failed first (sleeves, headgasket, connecting rods, axles, etc...) and at what horsepower you think you were making when this occured? I have some choices there but feel free to add your own.

I'm going to use this poll in my report as research so please dont go off tangents or start any pissing contest with each other. If you have any question, Please PM me.

Thanks A lot fellas.

The first thing that breaks is piston ring lands.

I wish I had a cool project like that for school.

Instead, I've got firm valuation, WACC, DCF, covariance, etc...

Def. ringlands......extended periods of heat/pressure will crack those in no time.

The ssautochrome manifold will definately go before your ringlands, lol.

Besides getting aftermarket forged pistons of course. Are there any alternatives to making the ringlands stronger so they don't blow out? I mean headgasket you can just get a better or thicker one, but anything on ringlands?

Tuning... proper fuel and spark. And then stronger pistons.

Ring lands definetly - after 4 months of boosting on a stock motor, I broke all 4 - My senior project - intake and exhaust manifolds for turbo gsr (ME senior @ Pacific)

that's what I would say too.
I am currently boosting 10psi daily on my JDM B18C.
I haven't had anything break down yet but i am assuming the headgaskets the most. I am tryin to go with some thicker headgaskets to lower the CR along with some ARP headbolts.

Yea, but historically at my school, it doesnt really get anywhere. One person will do something for a senior project and abandon it when they are done or they will butcher the existing car to match it to their project. So better to design my own intake and turbo manifolds - at least I get to keep it.
