Default vss/ speedometer

i have a 90 si and the problem is that everytime i down shift from 5th to 4th the speedometer goes out. or if i hold at high rpms in 4th it would go out also. then the check engine light would come on and i would wait till the engine cools down before fixing it? ive fixed it about 10 times in the last month. do i need a new cable or a new one of the horseshoe clips. need advise already searched.

thanks in advanced.

Check the cable in the back of the guage cluster first, the clip in the back on the cluster tends to not do its job.
