Default WTF Surging Idle

Ok so my 1995 Honda Civic Ex 5spd radiator fell to pieces. Luckly it was parked, so I had it towed home. I replaced the thermastat, radiator, hoses, and clamps. I filled it will about 3/4 of a gallon of coolant, and started the car. It ran fine for about a minute, and then the idle started to surge. It revs up to 2200 then falls to 1500 and repeats the process.

I was told that air in the coolant system would cause this problem. How do I bleed the air out of the system?

you can turn it on and pour more coolant in it, let it go down and pour more into it

Set the heater controls to full HOT - but do not turn the heater on.

With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Start the engine and top off the radiator as needed. Allow the engine to idle till the cooling fan kicks on/thermostat opens up - top off the radiator as needed.

This is all I do for my 99 D16Y7 - hasn't failed me yet.

there is a bleeder screw on the housing attached to the block (where the upper radiator hose connects)

well the car needs to be warm w/ the climate control set to hottest setting (fan/heat doesn't have to be on). You want to open the bleeder screw so that coolants starts to spurt out. It'll spurt coolant, then air, coolant, then air. Once it's a steady stream of coolant you've gotten all the air out.

same here thanks...

actually thats what did last time, i left it open for a while too cause it kept shooting out air after a long period of coolant, so that i had to top it off again...maybe opening the rad cap and topping off the rad allowed for more air in...
