Considering the RSX Type S......................help please
So my 1999 EBP Si got stolen and raped (stripped) so I am looking at buying a RSX-S. My sister has a 2002 Type S and for the first time today I took it out to see what its got (go fast, lol). Anyways... I was extremely surprised at how ungodly slow the car felt. It felt like my little b16 would have handed the cars *** to itself.
So my question is... Are they extremely restricted from factory... I mean I cannot imagine slapping on an intake and exhaust and the car completely changing from tame to beast. Usually if a car is fast its fast even with the factory equiptment.
Thanks for the input... I was just excited about the Type S and I felt like I shot it down as soon as I drove it.

This is by no means me saying my old Si would beat a Type S. I was simply saying that the car felt very very slow , even compared to my already slow si. I was not expecting this.. I was under the impression that the rsx-s was a high 14 to low 15 second car.
So please dont make this into every other thread on Hondatech and start an argument.
Maybe you could have answered my actual question then just bitch about something else. Are they extremely restricted from factory? How much does it change with minor bolt ons. THANK YOU

Bolt Ons + Race Header + K PRO = good stuff
K pro alone is good though

its suppose to be luxry sport car.. and it's in the high 14s/ low 15s according to car and driver but ofcourse it depends on the driver. I bet there are sum ppl out there who can drive it in the 17s.. the car does responds well to the bolt ons.(I/H/E) exactly how fast you want from a $25000 NA 2.0L inline 4 car?
I've owned what you've owned, so I'll wade in here.
In another lifetime, I used to campaign a V-dub in the Rabbit-Bilstein Cup. In a tech session with the series sponsors, one of my fellow competitors complained that the series was too damn restrictive re engine modifications. At a minimum, he wanted the spec series to permit us to change camshafts & valve springs.
The response he got from the tech inspection guy was classic: "So you wanna take a Volkswagen and make it into a Fiat?"
My point is, if you don't like the Type S as delivered, you can spend a boatload of cash buying modifications but you're probably not going to like the result. The car won't be much faster -- a few tenths here or there, at best -- and more than likely, you'll experience a host of reliability problems, to say nothing about tanking the manufacturer's warranty.
Also -- and this is really just my opinion -- Honda has never been about acceleration. There's only so much grunt in a 2-liter motor. Honda's more a package deal: you know, synergy. If the basic combination of engine, tranny, chassis, "feel," etc., doesn't work for you, you'll probably be happier with a different manufacturer's car.

I kinda know what ur talkin about. I felt my GSR was the same way when I drove an 02 Type S. The 02 I test drove felt slow but it actually was just more balanced than my GSR. I think thats just because the older VTECs seemed to really kick in above 5k where the IVTECs have a more balanced torque curve.
Do yourself a favor and go test drive an 05 type S. I did and thats what I bought because it felt more similar to my GSR. A little more power and has the 8100 redline again. Like one of these other guys said, Acura has become a more luxury brand and has lost some of its sporty edge, but it still beats the racing heritage drum a time or 2.

This is where a lot of people are mistaken in my opinion... They look at K series engines and judge them with a b series point of view...
It is a whole different ball game... No other honda engine, not even the s2000 motor, rensponds to mods the same way...
On a dynojet, an average type s put out around 170 whp... With i/h/e and $900 hondata K pro.... that becomes around 190-200whp... With cams, you are looking at 220whp..
Check this out for example...
k20a2 with 52mm ITBS and hondata K pro... nothing else
that is stock vs ITBS+ K pro

here's the car

Or look at this...
k20a2 with 52mm ITBS and crower cams stage 2 3/4 and crower head internals ($1500 value retail for everything)

All this still on stock OEM block... In all motor, it is not even worth argueing about anymore... there is no doubt, K is worth it... in my opinion at least

The Type-S feels slower but is faster. It IS a high 14 low 15 car right out of the box. The main difference, and what makes it feel slower, is that the power delivery is much, MUCH, more linear. On the old B16's you have this sudden kick in the *** that makes it feel like you just cracked warp onve you hit the big cams. The i-Vtec system is so smooth that, although you still notice it, it's not the leap it used to be.
Two options, you can either get used to the feel of a more refined engine, or look elsewhere. Even with a LOT more power, you probably won't get the FEELING you are looking for from a Type-S.
Personally, I love the car, and I highly recommend it.... but remember that it's not a race car.

WTF? why not just buy a full race turbo kit for an 02 type s?
save some money buying a pre owned 02, and send that money on over to full race.....im sure a 350whp rsx wont feel too slow to you. . . . :D
