If it has a 65 series front tire, ditch it for a 70 and drop your front triple tree down about 5mm. Other than that.. awesome bike. Feels stronger than my '04.
EDIT: Probably need to modify the front tire hugger to compensate for the taller profile.

I had a 2001 r6 which is pretty much the same.
It's a great bike.. probably a tad slower than my ninja zx6r. The only thing about the 99 r6 is the second gear issue as someone already mentioned and the fact that it isn't fuel injected. Not that carbs are bad.

It was a problem for 99-02's (some people think they have tranny problems but its actually a broken detent spring). F.I. is a bit smoother than carbs and easier to tune.
I miss my '01 R6

it is fixable so if you can find a good deal on a R6 just fix it your self.

Since you can fix it yourself and all, I was wondering, when after replacing the 2nd 'n 6th gears and all the other necessary parts, will the problem be solved permanently or will it only delay it for a couple of thousand miles?
my buddy bought his '00 from a dealership right before that tranny problem started happening...the dealership replaced the WHOLE tranny free cuz it was under warranty...15K miles later and no probs, he loves it...fast as all hell (which R6 isnt?)
from what i read, in second gear it kinda feels like its hiccuping. like losing traction. or kind of like misfiring, like power for s split second then no power for a split second.
thats from what i read

if thats the case then my buddy had a whole different issue...his would just randomly pop out of 2nd gear and sometimes he'd have trouble shifting into the gear all together
dont let this discourage you from buying the bike tho, especially if you're getting a good deal...not ALL of those year R6's have tranny probs.

pro - you will get a good view of the back tire/tail section of the honda bikes riding with you.
con - it's not a honda
Just kidding. I have had a few buddy's with r6's and r1's. The only complaints I have seen was with the tranny and the welded on rear subframe. If you get into an accident you cant just bolt a new one on. I think they changed that in the newer ones though not sure which year it was changed on.
If you can get a fuel injected bike do so and save yourself the aggravation of carbureted bikes. (That is if you plan on working on it yourself.) Since going to the 929 which has fi I dont think I ever want another carb'd bike. Well other than a pocket bike or an xrf 50 but that's because they dont come with fuel injection.....

Most of the bikes with 2nd gear tranny problems are due to unclean 1->2 gear shifts by the rider. I had 25k on my R6 when I sold it and no 2nd gear problems at all.
The 99-02 R6 trannys have 3 "shift forks" (forgot the correct term) while the '03+ had 5. Thats why you dont really hear about the '03+ having tranny problems. On another note, 00-01 GSXR750s had 2nd gear problems too
