Default Slipper clutch???

Ok how exactly does a slipper clutch work?? My conclusions that I've drawn are that it slips itself under too much pressure and therefore, not overpowering the tranny and wheel. Am I right or horribly wrong?? Thanks guys.

i rode on my coworkers 05 r6 after having ridden my 05 zx6r and after doing so i can say that the slipper clutch is a real nice thing to have. when u downshift 1 or more gears its like the revs gently adjust to match the new gear. without it u get this jerking sensation in the back.
