Default overheating?

so my 90 sedan is overheating alot. everytime i park the resivor pops and gurgles. i know the stock LX's 1.5 is on it's last leg and i am preparing to do a B16a swap. but i kinda want it to stay running a little while longer. what would cause it to over heat and the fluids spilling over into the resivor? i was thinking thermostat but since this is my first honda i though there could be something else i don't know of.
