painted my CRX, looks crazy.......
ok so i bought a 90 si crx...... it was pretty damn clean in the first place, just some paint chips that were just getting surface rust, 2 good sized dents i had to take out, and countless little door dings (it was allready white so they were hard to see)......im more into the go-fast side of things so i was going for no rust, and clean body.....paint chosen was the cheapest white out there, GM fleet white, clear coat allready in it......
my half *** paint self used a harbor freight HVLP gun, $30 and a harbor frieght compressor which had plenty of air. at first i could not get the gun to spray a mist at all, just a bit of mist and lots of bloches. then i realized i didnt mix in any reducer. after that it got a bit better, but after 2 hours of trying to get the spray pattern right i gave up and painted it. the weird thing is with a spray can i do awsome, ive painted a couple cars with spray cans and had it last a year looking like a real paint job lol.....
Now my car looks like the door of a refridgerator, it has that texture on the entire car, which i was bummed about, but now that i look at it i really like it, its different and makes you look twice....it doesnt look too bad because its the same texture everywhere on the car, just looks like your fridge does, a constant "ripple" effect. i tried to get pics that show it but its hard to capture....anyways onto the pics....

let me know your thoughts, o ya and anybody know what caused this? i think ill just keep it like this, i know i could wet sand it but its unique lol....

Wet sand, if you don't later it will just look like it came out of a rattle can and it will go from unique to looking like ****. Sometimes being unique isn't a good thing.

ok you seem much more knowlegeable about paint than i, what would make it "less likely" to look like **** by doing the wet sand, and what will make it do that?......if i can keep this look i really would like to, its pretty cool, much better to look at in person, it looks much much better

I work at a body shop and I guess when you sprayed the paint out of the gun without any reducer, thats what made the texture because the paint didn't lay down smooth. Also, did you prep the surface with any type of cleaning solvent? We use this stuff by RM called 900, it cleans the surface of all oils and dirt and ****. If the surface wasn't clean, (not saying it wasn't) sometimes the paint can wrinkle and lift. My advise is if you want it to look like you originally intended, wet-sand it with 600 grit wet sandpaper on a block. Try to get it smooth, but also try not to break through to the original paint. Keep wiping it and checking while sanding. The smoother the surface you are painting on the nicer the new paint is going to lay down. After that, fill up the spray gun and don't forget the reducer this time!
Good luck!
Good luck!
Chrome Pipes,
sorry i may have sounded very off in my original post......yes it was cleaned, i dont remember the name of the chemical, but it was from a automotive paint supply store, and i have been talking to the owner throughout the process of body work and used the cleaner he specified. it was very clean, and i DID NOT paint the car until i got the recuder, i just noticed i didnt mix it in while i was trying to get the spray right, it just came out blochy, do you think it will last like this? i have a buddy whos car did this and its lasted over a year now......just trying to get ideas....thanks for any input (honestly its all good to me, im very engine/tech smart, but im like a 85 yr old getting on the internet for the first time when it comes to paint

It's hard to see in the pics, but from what you have said and what I can make out in the pics; it looks like the paint lifted or something. I thought you were spraying basecoat/clearcoat, but i re-read your 1st post and realized that it's single stage. As far as it "lasting" like this, when the paint is finally dry, that is how it is going to look. Since it is single stage, I would try to wet sand it with 1000 grit sandpaper on a block and see if you can buff it out. Sorry I misread the post, but try to get it smooth with 1000 grit. If it is too f'ed up and you can't get it smooth, or you break through - game over. Gotta start from the beginning. Props on painting the car yourself, it's definetly not as easy as it looks. Again, good luck.
chrome pipes,
again thanks, honestly even though i have no knowledge of paint, it did not have anything to do with "lifting".....when it was sprayed you could see that it looked like rough sandpaper when it hit the car, and it actually "laid down" while it dried......how long do you think this "textured" finish would last? a year or longer? i really think it looks great, and if it will stay id like to keep it, i think the only way it would have a disadvantage to being wet sanded would be when washing the car you would be hitting a "rough" surface????

im pretty sure i could with no problems, but if the finish will last i think i may just keep it lol.....nothin like a 3d paint job lol....i keep getting pm's that it lifted after it was sprayed, but when it was sprayed it looked much more 3d than that, it actually laid down durring drying

Really looks like an air pressure issue. Question did you use a regulator and filter for your compressor? Also what was the tip size 1.3, alot of the Harbo freight guns even there HVLP ones all seem to have a 1.5.

not sure on tip size, i set the compressor at 60lbs, filtered, then the gun regulator down to 20psi......thats what i was told to do by the paint store......
not sure.....could have been a bad mixture i guess, the paint store gave me the correct ammout of hardner for a gallon, and i mixed it all at once....so im not sure how that could have been messed up.....maybe i just suck at adjusting a paint gun, but me and a buddy tried for 2hrs straight.......ill just rock the "fridge" as i now call it lol
