ECU Issue - Gooped up Chip - Hondata Related
Okay, here's the deal... Ordered my Hondata s200 last week, and was curious about how it actually went in the ECU, so I opened up my P72 tonight...
Much to my dismay, it seems that the ECU I received with my swap has already been chipped, and the replacement chip is covered in this white epoxy glue type crap... The front cover of the ECU has a "Feel's" sticker on it, and the new chip (under the epoxy) has the word "new" and some japanese characters written on it...
My understanding is that this chip needs to be removed so the EPROM socket can be installed, but I'm REALLY concerned with this epoxy shat that's piled on there for God knows what reason...
Should I be concerned about this? I'm just afraid that if I try to cut it off or pick it off, it'll pull the traces right off the board, and I'll be screwed...
Should I be looking for a new, virgin ECU???

You may want to sell that one and get another ecu. That looks like a JDM ecu, with the surface mount connectors. The USDM are easier to work on with "regular" components.
The advantage of what you have is that it's got the extra parts for the external eprom already added. I agree with you though, I would be worried about getting that crap off without damaging something. It's not hard to find the parts for adding the eprom, I have them and there's several other places, ebay, etc.

JDM ECUs are cake. There is way less desoldering. If the person who is chipping your ECU can't handle the SMD components in the JDM ECUs, I wouldn't want them touching any ECU I owned.

The epoxy is there to prevent anyone with a ROM burner form bootlegging their software. It will require meticulous heating/scraping/wiping/desoldering to remove that chip. It can be done, but it is a pain in the ***. Sell it and get another P72. Put the left over $ in your pocket. Most any JDM ***** will pay a premium for it.
