casting is generally used to get parts to near net shape. then they are machined form there.
I used to work for a company in the foundry and we cast copper. It was melted down in a large furnace and then was poured in liquid form onto a casting wheel. It was maybe 6-8 ft diameter and the copper was cooled enough to solidify it from there even though it was till red hot. It then traversed down in bar form to a mill. It was maybe 3-4" in diamter before it went into the mill and came out the other end about .500 diameter. There was a series of wheels that squashed it down. from there it was coiled up and then sent to wherever to be drawn into wire.
There alot of sites out there that tell you how to make a foundry at home. Just do a google search.

I've done brass casting for parts of a stained glass lamp I built.
What I did was contact (through a friend) a local college's art department and did it there. It was done using the "lost wax" method.
