What do you do on a long ride?
This might be a newb question but what does everyone do on a long ride? I like to cruise on my bike on the highway or hit some backroad higways and travel for long distances. But after awhile the sound of the exhaust and riding alone gets boring and it makes me not want to take these beautiful long trips. I was thinking about picking up an Ipod and riding with that for some musical background. Anyone have any other ideas or try this out or just highly recommend not riding with music?
Just basically I want to take these long rides but I can't keep myself from getting bored.

its probobly not the most safe thing to do...but try some earplugs for highway rides, and i usually shift around a lot. change up my posture. it makes it a lot easier for me to ride with friends.
Yeah but here up north I can't find anyone to ride with me and after about an hour or so it just gets dull. Maybe I should just stick to the back roads and the fast twisty highways.
I am installing my XM Roady radio on my bike in preparation for a 3 daytrip to the "hill country" southwest of Austin.
Used an mp3 player / radio on my last long trip but the mp3 player broke so I had to just use the radio and i got tired of trying to find good radio stations so i got the XM...but this is the 1st time i'll be using it for the bike - got hooked on having it in the car though.
pretty nice to have news, traffic, weather anywhere on the continent too.

After getting tinnitus (hearing damage) from the helmet noise/buffeting, I wear earplugs on every trip where I plan on exceeding 45mph. Which is about 98% of them.
For music, I use these http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6.asp which are an earplug with a speaker in them.

there around $100, and they cant be beat for sound quality - but it might be overkill for most people, but everything else is just earbuds, etymotics are the only ones that actually significantly isolate outside noise that i know of.
i use mine daily at work to block out the office noise / chatter.

How have you guys managed to get the plugs in without hurting your ears?
Every time I try typical earbuds they get shoved around and out of place putting the helmet on making the sound coming from them useless. Then, when I take my helmet off it hurts like hell.

The ER-6's go in snug and stay out of the way. But you have to get used to them being IN your ears. Ok i'll shut up about them, since they're out of most people's price range. i'm just saying they're worth the investment, if you're a music freak.

I believe you and saved that site so when I win the lottery I can purchase my own set. Thank you for the advice and the recommendation. Just because your price range and mine are different don't mean I don't appreciate your input.
So thanks for your help!

High end ear-audio is where it's at. I've thought about a set of ER's for a while.. but couldn't justify it over my B & O A8's and Grado SR60's.
I guess I've got a reason, now.
