Default Bearing on top of the mainshaft

I just finished putting in a Quaife by myself. Wasn't too bad a task overall. Now I am concerned because the Large bearing on top of the Mainshaft comes off very easily! Its supposed to be a pressed on bearing. Should it come off so easily? Anyone ever see this before? by the way the transmission is an h23 m2s4.

You've torn into a tranny?!

:shudders:

You're a braver man than I.....

Original poster: You say it's not that bad of a job; don't you have to set a bunch of clearances? Or is it more of a "assemble it and make sure everything's still in spec" kind of thing?

It's not as bad as people think... the quaife does not require shims so as long as you don't remove any gears from the main shafts you'll be ok.

Did you press the bearing off to begin with... Bearings cant take being pressed on and of repeatedly or they tend to break. Best bet replace the bearing, saves you from having to replace it when it fails someday, not long from now, when your driving down the road.

here are some pictures
what bother me more is that it appear that the bearing seem to be holding everything on place and without the bearing on place the gears are loose. should it be like that on the h23 transmission?

I got an h22 transmission apart too but the bearing is on it tight. is this one of the way the h23 differ from the h22 transmission?

when I changed my tranny housing, I just pulled that pearing out, and replaced it with another one, didn't have to be pressed in. I think the manual say'd to use a bearing puller which all it does is pull out the bearing evenly. THerefore, I don't think the bearing is pressed in, just make sure u align that little metal peice with the bent part properly, and reassemble the tranny, here are some pics of mine, by the way another way u can assemble it is put the main bearing inside the housing where it's supposed to mount and mate the 2 housings together, makes it much easier this way

So do the gears and synchros have to be pressed on and off, or do they go on easily like the bearing?

that's sort of what i want to know? I know that on the h22 they do is on the hems manual but on an h23, I don't know if the bearing and/or gears should be all press just like the h22.

There's plenty of little parts in a motor also.

It still gets me, though. I will tear into a motor no problem, but won't dare get into a tranny; it's a black box to me that does a job....if it breaks, I'll replace it.

its not hard at all, its less complicated than the engine. its all about taking your time and paying attention to details. plus one can admire the ingenuity of how the Honda transmissions are build-very impressive

yea that bearing will come on and off easily. It was easier for me to ahve the bearing on the shaft so that the metal shim thingie below it didnt keep messing up. I was terrified to take apart a tranny (because fo the story gears will jsut fall apart blah blah blah), its not that big of a deal.
