Sleeves could be leaking at the base.Between the sleeve and the block, not at the head gasket. This would not show with a compression test.

It could also be the headgasket leaking NOT around the combustion chamber, but leaking from the water-jacket into an oil-return passage.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with my prelude. Oil in water, water in oil. First thought - head gasket. Wrenched off the head, gasket is fine.

Compression tested great accross all 4.

*Impending feeling of doom*

Sure enough...sent the head off for magnaflux/compression test ($30), came back and the head cracked inside between an oil and water galley.

The car didn't smoke, steam, sputter or anything....ran great actually. But as soon as I slowed down (I was on the highway at the time) to about 40mph, the temp gauge pegged! Luckily I was near my buddy's garage.
