1st Gen CRX Si distributor improvement- 50 cents
A many of you may know, I have been experimenting with improving the spark advance curve on the 1st Gen Si distributor. I have successfully completed my experiments and here is my report:
The stock 1st Gen Si distributor is Old School, right out of the 1950's. So I applied some 1950's technology to it. The distributor advances the ignition timing not with silicon like a modern ignition system, but with a combination of vacuum and centrifugal advance mechanisms.
The Centrifugal Advance part of the distributor is a pair of small weights buried deep in the distributor. As the distributor spins, the weights are forced outward due to centrifugal force and in turn they force the ignition timing into a more advanced setting. The weights are regulated by a pair of small, stiff springs. The stiffer the springs, the less the ignition will advance in relation to engine rpms.
I have replaced the stiff springs with a set of somewhat lighter springs. This allows the iginition timing to advance faster and sooner in the rpm curve. And in turn, this increases engine performance.
I replaced the stock springs with a pair of springs that I bought at my local hardware store for about 50 cents. And they work great. I do not have dyno number to compare the before and after, but I certainly can feel an improvement in the "butt-o-meter."
I have rebuilt an extra distributor with these lighter springs and I would be happy to sell it to anyone for $50 plus shipping costs.

a very old trick from cars with mechanical advance distributors.
just be thankful you don't have to deal with points!
