Default EF doin some funny things. . .

ok, well for one, after i drive it for a while, the check engine light comes on. im thinkin its one of two thing, either my electric fans dont work, or its because i have water in the radiator instead of coolant. could this be possible?

Second, in any gear but first, the car seems as though its struggling, unless i punch it hard. its sluggish in 2nd thru 5th early in the gear. doesnt really do it in first though, but that could probably be because it punch it just hard enough. i was told maybe my clutch is slipping, but wouldnt it do that all the way thru? maybe spark plugs, or bad injectors? maybe fuel pump?

check for any CEL's for the check engine light

and do a normal tune-up (plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor) and then see if it still does it.

well, the motor was supposably rebuilt about 21K ago, so i would thing they did everything then, im not sure. the wires look pretty recent, and i dont have the socket to pull the plugs, but i know some people who do.

the check engine light is not coming on because theres water in the radiator other than coolant and its not from your electric fan not turning on. you should pull out your carpet on the passenger side and then unbolt the 4 10mm bolts and read your ecu for the codes. make sure that the check engine light is on when you go to read those codes. other wize its not gonna blink anything.

and for the sluggish thing you should go get a tune up. but theres alot more things that could be causeing the problem

always assume everything on your car is the shittiest part possible, unless you've replaced it yourself.

next time you get a CEL, take a few minutes and pull the carpet back on the passenger floor and check the ecu code. here is a list of codes:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=978933

disregard that post when it says to jumper wires together and etc. All you need to pay attentiong to is how to interpret the blink blink of the red light on the ecu and the listing of 1-91 codes.. When you take the carpet back and expost the ecu, you will see the red blinking light(it only blinks when the CEL is on). Its unbelievably easy mang, take the few minutes and git r dun.

do a full tune up on your car. Replace the

and use a bottle of fuel injector cleaner.

Once the light comes on,the code has been stored...

If it resets when you turn it off,
It is most likely the code for the O2 sensor..

dude, if you turn off the key, the code is gone, ANY CODE, o2 sensor or otherwise. It only comes back if its a recurrent problem. This isn't hard vs soft code obd2 stuff here..

the o2 sensor is BEFORE THE CAT. The cat will not affect the signal coming from your o2 sensor.

actually now that i read a few more post, it was my o2 sensor that gave me the phantom code. same thing turn the key off and it's gone. mine would come on for no reason and i'd hold in the clutch and turn the key on and off to get rid of it while i was rolling. replaced the o2 sensor and reset ecu and it hasn't come on yet.

The ecu stores the codes in its memory. The codes are stored until the battery is disconnected or the hazard fuse in the engine bay fusebox is pulled.

on an obd0 ecu, do you know of a way to retrieve code information from the computer WHEN THE CEL IS NOT ON?

Have I missed something here?

Yup, I sure have:

(1:31 AM 4/10/2005) eda6: Once you turn the car off and restart it. If a cel isn't generated again the last series of codes will still be flashing on the ecu.

thanks again.

I got so used to pulling the fuse after every CEL issue/fix.

<U>LOL!</U>

good call. That's exactly what I just did, to see if my recent o2 sensor code was still there. Indeed it was. Thanks duuuude.

i guess im still lost. once the CEL flashes at me from the gauges, is the code stored some where in the ECU until you manually reset it, or does the code reset everytime you turn the car off or disconnect the battery? If the code is stored do i follow the instructions on the link you posted up?

forget that link.

the next time your check engine light comes on, go to the ecu, which is under the passenger footwell, and check to see what code is blinking on it.

Don't ask any more questions until you have done this.

yeah, for crx's and civics 1988-1991 there is an LED on the actual ecu itself.
