Searched 90-91 Dimmer in 89 car..... How?
I swapped over to a 90-91 Cluster but when I plugged the dimmer in, it smelled like smoke and the lights went out. I plugged the 89 dimmer back in and it works.
Can someone explain how to get the 90-91 Dimmer to work with the 89 car?

The 90-91 uses two modules for the dimmer. One is the actual dimmer adjuster on the dash and the other is underneath the dash with 6 connectors on it. I don't know how to swap but just wanted to let you know. I just put a 88 crx dash in my 91 hb and I am still going to use the 91 dimmer switch and module. Too much of a hassle to rewire all that ****.
what i did was i just left the 88-89 dimmer danglin behind the dash tied up out of sight, i'm never going to make it any dimmer so it's fine
so i have a dummy 90-91 cluster w/dummy hazard, rear defrost (window don't work for some reason), and dimmer
just a good place for gauges in the future

actualy i know a easy way to do this. take apart the 89 dimmer and desolder the pot (the part u turn). next cut ur dash part (the **** one) off bout 3 inches away from the plug and keeping the plug orientation solder the wires to the pads. if the **** brightens when u turn the **** down revrse the outter 2 wires. then mount the **** and shove the 89 dimmer back in the dash. problem solved and no major rewiring

You are correct, I took the burnt up 90-91 CRX switch apart because the only dimmer I could find at the junk yard was from a 90-91 4 door and the little icon was turned sideways because the switch is mounted different. I just swapped out the guts.
I figure the 88-89 unit has the resistors built into it that's why it's wider. To narrow the 90-91 unit up they just remote mounted the resistors somewhere else. I think the resistor is down near the radio.
While I had the two 90-91 units appart, I had the same idea as you, run the three wires controling the dimmer wheel down to an 88-89 unit inside the dash. That way it still dims if I want it to.
Thanks

Ok, for anyone who is searching here's what I did.
A lot of guys want you to run the 88-89 unit hidden inside the dash, and use the 90-91 for show, to fill the hole and that "works" but that's not how I do things. Nothing Personal
I did what Diemaster suggested because I'd already had the idea and he just backed it up for me.
I opened the 88-89 unit and soldered 3 wires to the three posts that feed the dimmer ****. Then I pushed the wires through the many holes in the 88-89 unit and put it back together. I opened the 90-91 dimmer and ran the three new wires from the 88-89 dimmer to the three wires in the 90-91 dimmer.
Which wire goes where?
With the park lights turned on I touched each "new" wire to the next. One of them seems to make the lights go on if it touches either of the remaining two. I called that one my hot. I hooked it to the red w/ white stripe and the other two didn't seem to make a difference which one they went to. I hooked the three wires up in every combination and that it what worked best.
Next I set the dimmer on the 88-89 to the lowest setting. Now the 90-91 dimmer dims through the 88-89 curcuits. It doesn't get the lights totally out like the 88-89 did but it makes them ultra dim with a lot of fine tuning to fully on.
Good luck
and
Thanks
