You have a .871 ratio fifth gear. The gear (on the countershaft) that mates you your 31 tooth gear is 27 teeth. 27/31=.0871 loks like you have a nice transmission there.

M2S4 (32/26) and M2F4 (31/27) 5th gears and countershaft compliments:

check the circlips that hold the passenger side countershaft ball-bearing in. the one that you have to pop to get the transmisison apart. I had one break in my M2S4.

the bottom rightmost bearing...

That snap ring holds the countershaft in place. I have seen someone bolt the two transmission cases together without snapping that ring into place (like they were supposed to) and it busted a circular piece of aluminum out of the other side of the casing 2" in diameter.

haha dam you ..
your werent supoosed to see this .... (kidding)

honestly i didnt really doubt you but i wanted to find out for sure while i was in there...thanks again mayo ....

the tranny is acctually in good shape inside except for this broken ring ..and the 5th gear syncro is pretty toast lol
3rds not to far behinde but im not complaning for the price i pad ..i raided a freinds h23 tranny for the slave vss and clutch lever ...for free so it worked out ok ..i even took his clutch bolts haha (im on a budget )

im gonna have to put it back togther as i dont have the funds right knw to get tha parts.

but it should be fine for a few months ..

thanks again

to pirate...will this prevent me from snapping the ring in when the case goes back on ...and how important is it really

well guys its way worse then i thought

i knew 5th gear needed to be replaced due to the 5th gear grind problem ...so heres how it went

the clip was the 5th gear syncro spring (goes in between hub abd syncro ring)it hols the ring in the right spot ..so that broke and the ring drop a bit and 5th gear was only in the syncro hub about 1/4 of the way ....you can guess what happened after that ...there is nothing left of the 5th gear syncro hub and that why 5th was skipping even by hand ..not a big deal cause what i was going to replce would have been all that anyway

but, got looking into the rest and it turns out 3rd gear dog teeth are toast aswell as the 3rd/4th syncro sleeve is on its way out and 3rd and 4th syncro rings are done too ...all the hubs seem to be fine

2nd gear dog teeth are also gone as well as the ring and sleeve ...so all in all i paid 250 bucks canadian for a garbage tranny and al the guy says is it shifted smooth except for 5th ....so i hope i can salvage the gears and just replace the syncro rings and sleeves..i cant afford 1000 (canadian)dollar rebuild even though im doing it my self

all in all pretty shitty night ...was hoping to have a car next week or two but i guess it will be a few months now

Damn, sorry to hear that. I would imagine that you could use some parts out of a H23 transmission as a donor. that might be cheaper. at least you found where the rest of that wire came from.

You use that transmission as the ultimate experiment for Penzoil/GM Synchromesh.

lol they will ahve to pay me

so i guess im gonna try and slavage the gears and just get the syncro rings and try to just get hte sleeves without the hubs cause there fine

i figure its gonna be the same amount to fix this (mabye less if im lucky)as buynig another used tranny 85% chance its gonna grind a gear or two ..

so i ll rebuild this one and sell it next year ..or when ever i can save up enough for a lsd tranny ...or hell mabye if the gears are ok ill just buy a lsd for this one

gonna call gearspeed soon and see what they say ..i dont think i can buy parts form hondo..just the gear sets and there 190 to 250 for a gear set, ill need a few gear sets lol
