in need of tranny help
alright, first off i had tranny problems, with my stock tranny. so i brought an SI transmission, new clutch kit ,got the flywheel resurfced, new fluid everything and had it installed
here's the problem:
while the car is off i can go though the gears alright, sometimes you have to force them in, now while the car is on it is impossable to put it into any gear, and if you try for reverse it just grinds
if i put the car into 1st gear while the car is off then start it,as soon as it starts the car pulls, now with my clutch pedal, when it's fully to the floor the car pulls then when it it's half way up it's like it's in neutral, then if i ease it out all the way it doen't really grab it just moves like it's fully ingaged
and also i cant shift out of 1st while the car is started unless i put alot and i mean alot of force on it, then it just grinds alot before it goes into a gear.
i need help badly, i cant stand driveing a j-body anymore

the problem is with your clutch. It probably isn't adjusted right, where when you push it to the floor its not disengaging all the way, so its still dragging on the flywheel turning the transmission a little.
try adjusting your clutch. Also, maybe somethings messed up in the clutch assembly? such as the wrong size clutch installed, throw out bearing in there wrong, bad pressure plate, etc. or your clutch cable/cable linkage could be binding.

My friends 83 BMW 320i had the exact same problem. Grinded going into reverse, and all teh other gears were insanely hard to get into. The problem with his was that the throwout bearing was shot, the pressure plate had exploded and the clutch was trash. Plus he had to replace the hydraulic cylnders for the clutch and stuff like that. Hopefully yours isn't that bad.
Make sure your trans, fly, and clutch assembly are all the same year. 10 times easier that way. If you think you funked up on the part #s, call the autoparts store and double check the part # with your model. Sounds like the step on the flywheel was wrong, or wrong fly in general. - Darrell

I know exactly what you mean! Just dealt with this same problem over the weekend. IT'S NOT THE ALIGNMENT. The reason it's doing that is because you have the clutch adjusted TOO TIGHT. I know it doesn't make sense when you first think about it because you think "too tight" then it would go into gear it just wouldn't dissengadge. Wrong, you have it so tight that the release bearing is pushing so hard against the pressure plate it's not allowing any movement of the disc. Losen the clutch, according to spec the pedal and/or lever should have 1/8 to 3/16" play in it. Do that, I promise it will fix it.

Usually when you get a new clutch kit, it comes with a new pilot bearing and release bearing (throwout bearing). That wouldn't be the problem, and it takes quite a bit for that to go bad.
I was just about to say, check your clutch cable and adjust it. But you beat me to it.
