Default My first time at the track gone BAD!!

I went to the track for the first time last Fall. I have a 96 GSR with a DC sports short arm, Matrix rear muffler section, no resonator, H&R springs, T2 wing, and No spare tire. My first run I ran 16.5 at 88MPH, sh*tty I know, but I had wheel spin through the middle of third gear. Keep in mind it was a brisk damp night in WI. Anyways my second run I launched at 4000rpm and only go wheel spin through 6k in second. My 60' foot time was 2.53 sec and I got a 16.4, I don't get where I went wrong. Anyways the third run I was going to slip the clutch at launch at 5200rpms, did that and the tire still spun through first but they caught in second. So the tires gripped but the clutch did not and I totally melted the clutch (75k, stock) and got a 23.4. Is it possible that the clutch was slipping before my first run and thats why I got bad times. So know I bought a stage 1 clutch masters cluctch. Any ideas of what this should get me?? The tires are Dunlop and in good shape. Any other suggestions to get better times. Buying a system and rims so no money for mods

wheelspin should've stopped in 1st gear with a good launch. Try again when it's not so damp.

yep, if you still have wheelspin thru 2nd then either you dont know how to drive your car or your tires are bad. launch between 3-4k at about 50% throttle, dont floor it.

2.5 60ft times means ur launching too high or ur tires just suck. Practice launching your car, and you cant go wrong with that Clutchmaster 1. I have one its been on for about 2500miles and i loovveee it, grabs hard as hell in every gear. the first time i shifted into 2nd at 8k, scared the bejezus outta me, powwww! cd player skips, all the change falls out and then into 3rd, it chrips woith ease. Ive found on this clutch the best method is to slip it and not dump it. with my ITR flywheel, i love this setup. (havent tried any others, but i still love it) just make sure you break in your clutch correctly and have ur flywheel resurfaced.

wheel spin in third?
unless your heavily modded you shouldn't have had wheel spin in third to slow you
down and leading you to that 16.5 run. well if your goin to buy a system and rims
i don't see your time getting any faster even if you get the clutch masters stage 1

Sorry to hear your first time was so sh*tty. First with a 2.5 60' you can run high 15.x's. What altitude is your track at? Cold air helps so that shouldn't have affected your time. You should lighten up on the gas a little. Let the clutch slip and as you accelerate to minimize your tire spin. I launch at 3500 slipping the clutch and get 2.3 60' times. Unfortunately this has taken toll on the clutch 71k miles on. 3 years of drag racing, 250 runs if I had to guess. My car runs 14.7's with a stock clutch.

having flashbacks to last fall? Ive got just under 15k on my R and I think it's in need of a clutch already. If the roads are damp, I'll bounce the rev limiter in 3rd pretty fast depending on the surface. I couldn't imagine making 250 runs on a stock clutch. You know its out when you nail it and your tach climbs but you dont.

that is exactly what I was thinking.........why would you keep raising your launching rpm's when ur not getting any traction and just keep on dumping the clutch?!?.......i guess you live and learn though!

I think you need to adjust your "t2 wing" for more rear downforce.. it makes so much more sense.

it's all about the launch, trust me! with my setup below, I dropped the clutch @ 3500 rpm my FIRTS time at the track and ran 16.4@93 mph with a 60" of 2.8 sec! Every run after that I improved. I have to launch at 2500 and slip the heck out the clutch, otherwise I get tooo much wheel spin and the car bogs when shifting to second.

You need some Z rated tires or something better. Get a better clutch like a 6 puck one. While you are at it get a short shifter. And sell vtec controller then I ll give you more tips.

I'll never forget my 23.749 @ 77.45mph run.

It sounds like what happened to you.

I was told not to slip the clutch on the launch, just to dump it, at 4,500rpm.

I did that.

Whoa.

I thought I was spinning through the 1,2,and 3, but it then I smelled it, and it wasn't tire smoke, it was my clutch.

I backed off the throttle, and it caught... and I lumbered down the track, to pull that blistering E/T.

That whole run sucked *****...

R/T 1.092
60' 3.477
330 10.911
1/8 16.804 @ 46.82
1000 20.748
1/4 23.749 @ 77.45mph
