P13 ECU and 4WS
I have a 92 Prelude SI 4WS and my H23 just seized. I am looking at swapping in an H22a and was wondering if the JDM P13 ECU would be compatible with the 4WS controller since Honda took out the 4WS option on VTEC models.
I have the p13 on my jdm h22 and 4ws and I dont have any problums with it. Except the 4ws doesnt track all the time but they all have that prob...... so yea, youll be fine.
IIRC, all JDM Prelude VTEC's had 4WS...Every JDM P13 ECU I have seen has 4WS encoded on the serial sticker, including mine, so it throws a code 36 which aggravates me
...
EDIT....This leads me to a question...Anybody out there that has a JDM H22A in their USDM Prelude w/o 4WS, do you throw a code 36?

We did a swap of a P13(J) into a 95 civic EX... the tranny is the LSD, and I'm not sure if it's out of a 4ws or not, but we're throwing code 36, which I"ve been told is the traction control something.

The engine ECU does not affect the 4WS ECU at all.
The 4WS is controlled by a completely different ECU. It's found in the trunk.
Behan on this forum even used my JDM H22 ODBI ECU on his USDM 93 VTEC Prelude. He did not throw any codes.

I was under the impression that the 4WS controller in the trunk piggybacked off your ecu, meaning you need a 4ws ecu to use 4ws, but if you don't have it a 4ws ecu should run the car the same as a reg ecu. Doesn't the 4ws system only kick in at low speeds (meaning it has to be tapped into vss sensor or ecu)?

I believe the 4WS ecu in the truck does piggy back off the engine ECU but there are not any differences between the engine ECUs. I believe it only gets the speed info from the engine ECU, that's it. The rest of the info is collected from the various sensors throughout the car.
4WS works ALL the time. It turns the wheels in the opposite direction as the front wheels at speeds under 18 mph. Over 18 mph, the rear wheels turn in the SAME direction. The rear wheels turn depending on the speed and the angle of the front wheels.
The affects of 4WS are most noticeable under 18 mph.

So Im about to install a f20b into a 93 4ws. Will the p72 ecu work with the 4ws and the vtec. I know the most common combo is a p13 with vtec but its normally a h22. Please help. THx

No, completely wrong. The only connection between the ECU and 4ws control unit the service check connector so you can check the codes in the 4ws control unit. The ECU will have no affect on the 4ws system other than that. The 4ws control unit has it's own connection to the VSS and 4ws works 100% of the time, from a dead stop to top speed.

This is my 93 Si 4ws lude with an H22 swap and P13 ECU:

Yes you can use the P72 and still have 4ws work, see above.
