Default Oil pressure: read the engine AND turbo?

I was thinking with all the talk of oil restrictors etc. I picked on up... mainly because I suspect my turbo took a dump due to excessive oil pressure.

Now I was wondering, sure my oil presure guage is reading the engines oil pressure but how do i know what the turbo is seeing?

Here is a picture of my McMaster Carr oil line stuff. I have yet to toss the restrictor in.

Any thoughts?

oh and the line going to the turbo came with it. So it is AN -4 I believe. Everything else is somehere around the size of -3

If you wanted to see what pressure your turbo is getting couldn't you just put the restrictor before the gauge? Couldn't you put it between the block and the T on your firewall?

Then you would be able to see how much pressure is going through the line to your turbo... wouldn't tell you where your engine is at though... I suppose you could run two oil pressure gauges if you really wanted to... one before the restrictor, and one after.

Yea.. I figured that much....

I guess I can place the restrictor in front of the guage for a while just to double check that the pressure is acceptable and then switch it back so just the turbo line is getting it.

you want to place the restrictor as close as possible to the turbo so the area after the restrictor is small and will get oil to the turbo faster instead of having to fill the entire line with half the pressure available

I beleive with an oil restrictor, Oil pressure will increase, but oil flow will decrease. Kinda like puting your thumb over the end of a hose.

You may get a higher than usual reading if you read pressure right at the restrictor. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I was going to "T" off the line, right at the turbos inlet. In all honesty, if your drain is set up right, even without a restrictor, the center cartridge shouldn't see much pressure.
I'm running a restrictor with a -4 line and a -10 drain.

I was thinking about this, but remember the fluid wants to travel to the place with least resistance so in a motor there are plenty of other places for the oil to travel. Now with the garden hose, there is only one outlet.

Sort of like a fountain with more than one outlet.. you plug one, the others go higher..

Yep.

I was going to put the restrictor by the T going to the line that feeds the turbo. I figured I could put it on the turbo itself but that may cause foaming/bad jet/ etc around the turbo cartridge.

lol... wow...

I'm good now thanks Dan. New turbo. Oil restrictor inline. Gonna run an even larger return in the mean time while I wait on getting an auxilary guage for turbo only. Along with a few other things.

That TE post was old news Dan. And my car is running nicely. And I have yet to get it on the wideband. So I guess... this is PEACE doggg.

Beat Drw huh?.... how about you grow up... and stop acting like a m4d Tyte street r4c3r before you blow the welds off your intake.

Oh SHystrdyGSRtdy:

"Beat Drw" is a bunch of ricers who don't like me. They think I'm a **** because I think they act like street-thug-hardcore-racers and immature in general. When infact they can barely get their cars to run right... let alone fast. Unfortunately for me... some of those guys are my 'friends' who borrow my tools and dont return them, owe me money, and waste my time with questions easily solved with common sense.

And finally... CRXNation has been out to race me for the longest... when really I just work on my car for fun and the ocassional spirited drive.

*EDIT* I made a comment about his body kit.... I guess thats gone and it went from flat green to flat black.... nice...

*sigh*

in all honesty "beat drw" started as a joke because when i tryed to talk with him he got cocky with me like he was soooo much better than i was, plus we had the same set-up. i had a crx with a y8 and a zex kit / he had a crx with a mini-me and a zex kit!!! it was this whole joke about how he was my nemisis. i had the white crx (good) and he had the black one (evil)... just a joke between friends. yes i had a body kit and 16" rota's but i did that before it turned to really be "rice". Now, i have put my car back to a stock look and a put some nice clean 14" HX's. as far as cars that dont run right... i'll run you! im not scared! im non-vtec now, you are pushing more psi and you have better tires and i'll still run you! on the track too that way we can have the timeslips to proove it!
Talk some more **** you ****, i dont think im any better than anyone esle and i'm not a ricer, but you can call me one if you want. drew was talking **** to his friends who are actually my friends too! when i found out it pissed me off and i started joking about how i was gonna get BEATDRW for my liscence plates... then my guy tony was like we should start the beatdrw foundation! we joked about it for a while and then just put it in our sigs to mess around!
i made a post looking for someone to help me with my turboedit in the chicago area and drew felt the need to be the nice guy he is and make a post about how he knew some one but was NOT going to help me! that really did it for me! so tell me drew once your "friends" read what you said about them do you think they are still gonna want to talk to you?

I tryed to be your friend, but that didnt work... oh well

Thats the story

I don't think I need to post the threads where I gave my imput to help you out.

Regardless, we need to take this out of FI.

You got PM.

Oh and here is the oil restrictor for thread related purposes.

Oh I got the oil restrictor from Wicks Aircraft Supply. Should lower the PSI the turbo is seeing greatly. It came .040 inches and I drilled it out to .061 (the same size that ATPturbo uses on the restrictors that its sold to many HT-ers.

Hmm, nice to see I've made a guest appearance and get mentioned in a battle that I previously had no part in . Theres so many things wrong with this situation that I couldnt even get into on here. We already had our big stink about your fawkin tools so i'd appreciate it if i was left outta this one. But i guess i dont know anything cus i cant figure out everyday common sense.......Thank God I have the almighty Drew to spare time from his oh so incredible existence to answer 2 minute phone calls and tell me how stupid i am for not figuring out things that he too has probably once struggled with.....

I hope this thread gets locked. B4 it gets even more outta control. We can settle this on the streets, hopefully i dont granny shift or blow myself up with my hundred shot of naawwz. ***

Just throw a "T" between your turbo's oil inlet and the restrictor, and then tap the gauge from there.

Shouldn't be difficult
