Strange noise from tranny
I changed my MTF yesterday (1st time at 32K miles), and everything went well. I only used about 2.1-2.2 quarts of new fluid before it started pouring out of the fill hole, but I imagine that some old fluid was still in the tranny. I also installed a magnetic drain plug. My tranny now shifts a little slicker, and feels good. However, this morning on the way to work, I noticed a "whirring" noise coming from the tranny that lasts 2-3 seconds when I downshift from 4-3. This noise doesn't happen every time, just occasionally. It's definitely not a grinding noise, but the "whirring" is cyclical, I mean, it sounds like it has something to do with a part that's spinning in a circle. Does this sound like a problem, or does my new MTF just need to get broken in?
hmm...
Jim, did you flush the fluid first? I thought it was recommended you drain the old fluid, add new fluid, let it warm up, then drain it again, then fill it back up. That's what I've heard. I haven't done it yet myself.

I've narrowed down when the noise occurs. It happens for a few seconds when I engage the clutch, either during a downshift or even if I'm coasting in like 3rd gear, push in the clutch, let it out, there's the noise. The noise sounds a lot like reverse gear. That's my best description. And no, I'm not inadvertently shifting into reverse gear to cause the problem.
