Default Surging Idle - Help please!

Here's my problem:
When I start my car it idles immediately around 1700-2000 rpms, which I figure is normal because it was just turned on. After the car has been on for a couple mins and the temp is climbing the idle drops to about 1200-1300 rpms. At this point if I give the engine a little rev my idle immediately starts bouncing from 1500-2000 rpms and keeps this up for a good 5 mins. After that the idle drops down and bounces from about 1000-1500 and finally settles at around 1300. I'd say the idle bounces for a good 10 minutes before it finally settles and this is extremely annoying in traffic, plus it's just a bad way of drawing attention. I found a thread explaining how to adjust my fitv and thought I'd be able to solve my problem with that, but when I went to look for my fitv it seems I don't have one.

Am I just not seeing it or what? Also if I really don't have one, why is that and what are some other suggestions for stopping my bouncing idle?? I've tried adjusting that idle screw a few different times to no avail. Please help me out HT! I've been living with this for 3 months and I just can't take it anymore!! lol.

First off....what year car and motor? Is it a B18? Not all years had an FITV. I had the exact same problem you are having and it turned out to be the IAC valve.

I would also bleed the radiator. some times if there is air in there it will make the IAC freak.

How do I bleed the radiator/coolant?

The car is a 99 hatch converted to obd1 and the motor is a b18c1 block/b16 head with itr IM

You people should be able to identify that manifold.. You can see the "P73" stamp below the TB.

Now, you don't NEED the FITV. Waste of time to round one up, thats not your problem. Key on, engine off, whats the voltage read on your TPS?

I had the same problem on my 99 si and it was the IAC valve. Just clean it with some carb cleaner and see what happens then.

I just went and bought some stp intake manifold and throttlebody cleaner. That should work just as well right? Also, before I start removing things can someone verify for me which is the iacv? Is it number 1 or number 2? Thanks.

Well I went to pull off the iacv yesterday and I wasn't able to get the two hoses off at the bottom of it. Is there any way for me to remove only the screen inside the iacv so that I can clean it? Or do I have to remove the whole iacv? Also, would it be safe to just spray the screen while it's still in the motor? I've read through searching on here that some people didn't even remove the iacv before spraying, but on the cleaner it says flammable

Use a pair of pliers and "wiggle" the hoses off. Its not hard.

Ok cool. So I can just spray the cleaner directly into the screen then just bolt it back up with out completely removing it?

Today I went ahead and sprayed the crap out of the screen inside the iacv until it was a nice clean silver color. I also screwed the tb screw all the way in and now my car is idling at around 800 rpms
I let the car run for a good 15 minutes or so and had absolutely no surging. Thanks a ton for all the help guys

Ummm, if you had the screw all the way in then you have a HUGE vac leak somewhere. You have not corrected the problem like some others here think. I would be willing to bet that if your car has a FITV, then its leaking.

There is always that chance when something like this happens. From my experience all I needed to do was clean the IACV. Maybe you should check all the vac lines and see if there is a leak. If it is leaking you should be able to tell. Goodluck
