Default stupid tein flex question

i know this is probably a stupid question but im still learning and with no results from a search i figured i would try to get results here. when looking at a tein flex system it says it provides 16 levels of dampening force adjustability. what is the difference in level 1 to level 16? and which way do you turn the thumb screw to achieve the different levels

The levels are for the stiffness of the strut.
