Default Did I Just Mess Up? Main Oil Seal Install, *Pic*

Just pressing in my new main oil seal. I punched the old one out with a flat head screwdriver in a vice, cleaned out all the crud and went to press this new seal in.

Of course I didnt have the driver or whatever you call it to install the new seal so I improvised and using a roll of ductape that was the perfect diameter, figured out which way it went in and bang it about 12 times to get it all the way down and even, pulled the roll off and this little spring circle came up with it, I dont know if I broke something and it came out from underneath or if it was originally in there just placed like this

Small crack on the inside, spring circle is pulled out in this pic

The little spring circle that came out with it

Pic with spring cirlce placed back in under the lip, cant see it, good?

Now Im hoping this is fine and I can keep putting this engine together. Was hopeing someone could help me with how to install this unit, does it really just slip over the piece outside of the block and with some RTV high temp sealant seal off that side of the block after being bolted down?

Thanks Guys

yep, you messed up a bit. if the seal still looks OK you can put the spring back in a reuse. however i would go with a new one. try again with maybe a little more patience. put a little oil or assembly lube on the inside of the seal so it does not catch or grap the crank and make sure the outter area is clean. maybe try a piece of wood if you do not have the correct installation tool. good luck

The spring is supposed to stay around the inside of the seal.

I believe its to provide even pressure the whole way around.
