Default buying a 1990 EF Civic Hatch....

In the pics it looks mint, im going to see it later on.

http://www.montrealracing.com/...02496

Is there anywhere I could check that the rust just hasn't been painted over? Cause he says it was stored for 3 winters here in Montreal, Quebec. It has 190,000km and the motor is knocking. He wants 1100$ Is it a good deal?

Thanks

look at the rocker panels, see if there are any little holes where the lip is in front of the rear tire where the undercoating is sprayed. i dunno how to explain it , but if you know about ef rust , you'll know where. also check the underside of the rocker panel in the rear. check the rear bumper support , might indicate if it was rusty before. get a magnet and go around the arcs, you can tap on it , usually to see if's been fiberglassed , bondoed

It looks like it may have some rust on the rocker panels and maybe the quarters. Plus the motor is knocking which isn't good. 1100 is ok but you could get him lower. I would check the insides of the wheel wells for rust as well as behind the rocker panels.

actuslly thats not a bad deal if the car is rust free...the body seems hella clean...id rather spend 1100 on a hatch with a clean body and fucked up engine than spend 1100 on a hatch with a good motor and bad bodywork....engine part can be solved cheaply

its hard to tell from the pics, but if there is no rust then get him to lower the price to 700 and then its a good deal.

Use the 400 dollars for a motor swap.

i bought a 91 hatch si with a good engine, but my body was kinda dented for $1100.. yours cosmetically is like 10x nicer, but my engine runs like a champ.. so i guess the moral of the story is that $1100 seems pretty good for one or the other, but you pay a premium for both.. heh

$1100 isn't that bad but you should try asking him $700 for the shell.

yo *** that.. of course you can get ED's for cheaper, but holy *** people complain allot about cars being sold for $1000-2000.. just fuking buy it. If its in decent shape and the rust hasn't eaten a hole through the floor board, or major frame shifting accidents, then your ok. These cars are getting harder and harder to find in good shape if anybody didn't already realize this. And that white is fukin hot.. so hope you buy it. If you know whats up and have the space, replacement engines arne't that much unless you are going for a juiced up B.. D-series isn't a bad choice at all if you can find a good place to tune it.

Its an SI!!.....sunroof....Si seats.... Si lip.... 90-91 bumpers... moldings still black.... origional mud guards.... rear hatch cover.... tail lights aren't cracked like most ED's you have less wiring hastle because its MPFI.. you have a TACH cause its an SI....If its stock white your golden, cause ED's in white = who ever fukin sees them ..... wow low ballerzZ...

pick up a new head or block for $100 and slap that bitch in if needed.... maybe spend $50 for a gasket and $40 for a timing belt and some other misc parts.. say 300... ... say you talk the guy to $1,000 and that makes 1,300.... for a clean *** car with allot more potential in the future..minimal rust isn't a big problem at all.. and maybe a little naval jelly and rust repellent afterwards will do the trick for a good amount of time till repaint etc.. Wtf is going on...honstly... And if you can talk him lower, your golden. I wouldn't personally pass it up

more pointless arguing on the intraweb.......

make sure you check the rocker panels!! They rust bad! I just bought a 91 cx h/b and the rockers are non-existant! also check the floor under where the seat bolts to the floor, they get kinda cheesy there!

$1100 CAD is about $900 USD. I say that's not a bad deal.

Thanks for the replies!! Yes its 1100CAD so approx 900US for this mint hatch. Everything is original. Interior is so mint it looks like it came from the dealer! The sunroof has no rust around it, works like new. The quarter panels have NO RUST, its amazing almost unbelievable! I'm going to swap out the motor and put in my DX motor for now just to get around and put a new motor ASAP.

I hate when people doing comparsions like this but I'm going to do it. I bought my 1990 civic si for $500 with a blown motor and no rust and this was 4 years ago. I wouldn't pay $900-1000 for that, but thats just me. Considering how rare these cars are becoming especially Si maybe you should jump at the deal, if you consider it that.

I just bought an EF and the problems I had finding a clean, rust free car, running, and SI no less was ******* hard!

I can't believe some of the posts I'm reading here.
