poping out of gear
I have a 90 civic si that has a hard time ether staying in gear, or going into gear at all. 1st - 4th will go into gear (2nd id a pita tho) but it won't go into 5th at all. I can feel it just touching 5th but it won't go in. It seems like it needs to be adjusted, but I don't know.
Any help would be awesome, I'm confused lol

That happens sometimes with my Accord. Although it's mainly reverse and 1st that it won't go into sometimes. What I always do, whenever I'm leaving for work in the morning, I'll throw it in 1st and then put it into reverse and it always goes in.
When it won't go into first when I'm at a light or what not, I'll take my foot off the clutch and repress the clutch in, and it goes right now.
Does it grind at all? How often do you change your tranny fluid? Have you checked your tranny fluid recently?

If it pops out of gear, it's more than likely that your synchronizers are going out. My third gear went out when I was on a long drive from NC to MN. I had to shift from 2nd to 4th all the return trip. That sucked.
I just got the car so I'm not sure what has been done. I will be checking all the fluids today, it was wierd because 5th worked before, but on the way home with it, it just would not go into 5th. Also, when it is in gear, you can move the shifter from side to side, kind of wierd.
It doesn't grind at all, in any gear, but 2nd sometimes either won't go right in, or it pops out. 5th you can hear a small buzzing noise when you push the shifter in gear (5th), and the clutch is out like its touching the gear but not going in.

usually if it pops out of gear, the synchro spring is cracked and probably lodged in the tranny somewhere or usually it sticks to the magnet. the spring is a thin steel ring that holds the sleeve onto the gear. if you have problems with more than one gear, it could be clutch or fluid related or something is wrong with your selector mechanism that moves the shift forks.
if you have a hard time getting into gear, the hub is probably scarred up and down along the splines that the synchro sleeve travels causing serious binding. there are also burrs on the sleeve's inside teeth. along with this or separate, you can have a problem with the shifter mechanism tabs that move the shift fork. they can be bent.

OK, I put the car up, and I checked the shifter bolt, it was tight, but the bushing that the bolt goes through is sloppy. Also the "cup" that the shifter ball sits is is really worn out. That would explain the 2nd gear pop out, but not going into 5th?
I disconected the shifter linkage and moved the rod into 5th, but there still is no 5th. Is it possable that the 5th gear shifter fork is broken,or has come out of the synchro sleeve?
I had thought of rebuilding the transaxle, but I noticed that in the local wreckers, they have civic transaxles for $150 lol
Also, I checked the transaxle mount, and it was tight, very little movement at all.
I'm going to pull the transaxle, and take it apart. I'll let you guys know what happened. If I remember, I'll take some pics.

Its best just to get a new tranny, rebuilding the one you got will be more expensive. But most likely the syncros are gone. You can try some syncro mesh and go from there but that usually is used for gears that grind. and as for it being hard to get into 1st and reverse, most honda's do that. just go to first then into reverse, or just roll back a bit then it will go in.
Ya, but this one won't go into 5th at all. I will probobly just get a new one, but I'm going to take this on apart just so see what it is.

When you buy a whole kit from Honda/Acura, all your gear synchro's come in the kit, so you will eventually have all new synchro's by the end of the rebuild. If I remember right, the kit was about $225...OEM from Honda (Japan).
I having a similar problem with my GSR tranny. I put it in 5th gear and a couple of seconds it will pop out. Is this because my synchro is bad??? How much does it generally cost to get a new sychro put in? I talked to one guy and he said he thought it could be that I needed more fluid, but I put 2 quarts of Honda MTF when I installed the tranny. Go figure.
will do, i haven't been back at the garage yet. since I parked her in the garage for fear of causing more damage but i'll check it out. I've only had the tranny in for less than 2 months. I didn't think it could leak so fast.

I had a small leak in my GSR transmission and when the fluid got low I'd be cruising in 5ht gear and when I pressed the gas it would pop out of gear. When the fluid got really low I had to physically jam it into 5th gear and hold it there to get home. Don't go buying synchro kits and having rebuilds (unless you want one) until you check your fluid level.
Does it leak?
