Default Can't Get Car to Time Correctly

OK, I am desperate. My swap has been done for months now, but I have yet to be able to drive the car. The car starts and everything, but when I try to do the ignition timing, the red mark on the crank pulley will not line up with the mark on the timing belt cover no matter how much I advance the dizzy. I have checked the timing belt twice just to make sure and it checked out OK both times. I've checked the vacuum lines and they checked out also. There is no CEL light except for when I drive the car. When I jump the connector it shows a #3 which is the MAP sensor which has nothing to do with the idle or timing. I have a 94 GSR motor using the a 94 GSR engine harness in a 93 Civic hatch. I am using the Civic cockpit harness. I just had to rewire the IAB, knock sensor, and two VTEC wires. That's all I did with the wiring. If anyone has any insight as to why my car isn't timing correctly, please let me know. The idle as of right now is terrible and so is the drive. The timing is way too retarded...no pun intented! PLEASE HELP. Like I said earlier...I'M DESPERATE! Thanks!

I'm about an inch off and I set the timing gun on the #1 spark plug wire.

im about 99.9% sure your supposed to check and set timing off the white mark on the crank pully.

give that a shot and see how it works out.....

No the white mark is for TDC. I'm certain of that.

exactly.........so whats the problem......

set your timing light to 16deg and line up the white mark. once you move the timing gun down to zero it should line up to the red mark (or close enough to it)

thats how i have beed doing it for the past 7 years so i know its correct.

My timing gun is not adjustable. I timed the same motor on another car and it worked fine. I jump the connector by the ECU and put the clamp on the #1 spark plug wire and shoot the gun on the crank pulley. Normally the red mark will line up with the mark on the timing belt cover. However in this situation, it is far from it.

ur doing it correct since ur timing gun is not adjustable... i had a car come in this week witha cracked/chipped crank pulley and it wouldn't line up correctly until i changed out the pulley.....(guessing that knocked it out of balance)

line the points up correctly and give it a full spin counterclock-wise to make sure it lined up after a rotation, never spin it clock wise or u will throw it out of whack and lose ur tension....

So the cracked pulley was the problem? Darn I know the problem now. My pulley is chipped on the lip...DUH! I never knew a chipped crank pulley could mess up the timing. I didn't want to buy a new pulley for no reason. Thanks Big Will, you're a life saver. BTW, how much was the new or used pulley?

i own a shop here in town, had some laying around, but yes the pulley was the problem... sold it to the kid for 40.00

Its not messing up the timing its jsut affecting the way ur viewing the marks since the pulley is out of balance

A lot of times people don't put the crank pulley on right. Saw more than a few where the keyhole wasn't lined up and they forced it on.

Also make sure to jumper the ECU.
