Default sub making thumping noises

recently replaced my stolen headunit... and after i hooked up the harness of the headunit, including the sub preouts, i turned it on and i noticed the sub made a loud thump noise (like it sputtered out bass, but no music was on)...

so now, everytime i turn on the car, when the headunit loads up, the sub makes that thump noise... and same deal when i turn the car off as well; when i turn off the ignition the sub sputters out a single thump noise...

and thirdly, if i put my amp on max power, there would be random thump noises during music play or even when its paused...

and i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but when i originally hooked up my amp to the sub again, the rca cables that plug into the amp were only partly plugged in (poor connection), while the car was running... thats when i heard the sub make those thumping noises....

blown amp? it never did this before... so im not sure if its my headunit or the amp... TIA guys!

hu - pioneer 6700mp
amp - cheap american pro amp

oh yah and btw, the music plays fine with the sub n stuff... its just that thumping noise im curious of... every time i turn on and off the car you hear a "bump" from the sub

thanks fcm

edit: sorry, i tried searching earlier and couldnt find anything till i read the faq... i guess the word im looking for is "pop"...

so with that, i searched and found out about these pop on/off devices which remedy the problem... however, not only do i have the popping noises when car is turned off and on, but also during music play if the amp is up all the way... and regardless, i dont want to get TWO of those on/off devices; it would appear they only have one for on and one for off... and aside from that, it doesnt remedy the problem i have during music play...

so is my issue still the same as others with this popping noise? or is it just strictly an amp problem... and is it bad that i dont remedy this soon? ... thanks again guys

it does in fact sound like the amp is "oscillating" check your signal wires and make sure they're not cut, and if they're fine, the amp is the problem.
