Default who has an oil temperature gauge and why

just like topic says whats the purpose of knowing the oil temp. does the oil get that hot and if it gets really hot what effects does it have on the motor

Im pretty sure they monitor the temperature so they can stay on top of the oil pressure as well.

i know that but my question is . is it really nessesary will hot oil mess your motor up

For street cars or drag cars, it will not be an issue.

However, if you are into road racing, prolonged high RPM use really shoots the oil temps up. Its not good to go beyond the temperature threshold for the viscosity of the particular oil you are using. Some racing oils have a higher temperature threshold, while most conventional motor oils have a lower threshold.

As oil temperatures increase, they loose their viscosity, which as most of you know, can cause bad things to happen to bearings.
